You wouldn't believe the blank stares I'd get at the store whenever I'd walk up to the counter and ask, "May I help whomever is next?" I think that having the subjunctive and "whom" in the same sentance locks up many people's brains for several seconds.

I occasionally considered trying "whomsoever," but held off for fear that someone might get hurt.

hah! at my work we use the word "criteria" several times a day. the singular of it is "criterion" but nobody uses it--1 guy who used to work there did & he was kind of a jerk, so i usually say "criteria" in front of coworkers but "criterion" in front of patients. i'm a sell-out.
