hello, my name is bob...i just decided to try and find some fellow polysomnographic technologists on lj...
...loved the rant in the memories. i've only been doing this work for 6 months, just started cpaps about 3 months ago, but i think i've heard the phrase "do people actually sleep with all these wires on" about 900 million times. but yeah, of course i can relate to everything else in the rant too.
also the only television i ever watch is while i'm doing hook-ups...so it amazes me how many people can't turn that thing off durring the study.
i'm going to friend you...just let me know if its a problem. i'm kind of looking forward to more rants.
my sleep lab is under a university hospital...called strong.
its a pretty large lab from what i can tell of such things...14 beds and they are in the process of opening a 4 bed lab just for the ped. studies...
...we use somnilogica to record studies...and the hook up equipment is embla. and disposable titration cpap masks brought to you by respironics, inc. although i'm not sure if that goes for the SNAP style. last night only one of my two patients asked me if anyone ever sleeps with all this stuff on...so that's better than usual. of course the other one exhibited classic poor sleep hygiene, turning on the television every time he woke up.
we use rembrandt with embla equipment & stock a dozen or so different masks, some by respironics. i don't think we have the snap style, tho. we got a mini-pasteurmatic to clean equipment so we try not to use single patient stuff.
4 beds just for peds?! i hate running kids so that sounds like a small nightmare to me. we've got 8 beds at our main location & a satellite with 5 more. there's also a portable set up for inpatients, as we're attached to a hospital--another small nightmare. the patient rooms at our main lab don't have tvs, just the lounge. patients grumble about it but rarely request to get up & sit out there midstudy.
i don't work nights anymore, usually day/evenings. i scored records for awhile & now i fix equipment & do whatever random things the bosslady needs done, too. it gets hectic but is better than scoring 40 hours a week.
