drcjsnider prompted me with Dramione and my adoring public.
Hermione and Draco were walking down Diagon Alley. Side by side, almost touching, but not quite.
Still people were staring at them, turning their heads. Some were even stopping, whispering to one another about Harry Potter's best friend and her Death Eater boyfriend. Hermione hated the attention.
She cast a quick look at Draco, only he didn't seem to be bothered by all the staring. He had a faint smirk tucking at his lips, and Hermione could swear she heard him whistle once or twice.
"Don't tell me you're enjoying this," Hermione whispered.
Draco's smirk grew more pronounced.
"I hate it when they stare at us like I'm a nutcase and you're evil incarnated."
"I seem to recall that you, too, once thought that I'm an evil bastard," Draco replied. To Hermione's horror, he snaked one hand around her waist and pulled her closer.
"Don't, Draco, this will make it worse," Hermione whispered fervently. But Draco continued to walk unperturbed along Diagon Alley, keeping Hermione close at his side. Hermione ducked her head, a faint blush colouring her cheeks, when she noticed one particularly obnoxious group of witches and wizards, who had stopped dead upon seeing the unlike couple and were pointing at them openly.
"Honestly, some people have no manners," Hermione hissed.
Draco chuckled. "Just ignore them. Who cares what other people think."
"I don't care what they think," Hermione defended herself. "I just don't like them staring. It feels like I'm running the gauntlet."
"I guess you'll just have to get used to it," Draco replied dryly. Hermione huffed.
"Easier said than done," she said. "I already have to deal with all my friends telling me that dating you is a bad idea, the Prophet running a daily editorial on our relationship, and on top of all this, random people on the street think it is appropriate to point and stare. I feel like every time I step out of my flat, I leave every right for privacy behind."
"Don't you think I know all that?" Draco asked, sounding impatient. "It's not like it is any different for me."
"Yeah, well, but..." Hermione trailed off.
"But what?" Draco asked, getting angry now. "But it's all my fault? Is that what you meant to say? After all, I chose to be a Death Eater when I was 16, and now I deserve all the bad publicity. You, on the other hand, were everybody's darling. Your adoring public has only started to point fingers since you were crazy enough to let yourself be seen with the likes of me."
Draco finally dropped his arm from around Hermione's waist and quickened his pace so that she had trouble keeping up with his longer strides.
"Draco," Hermione called, reaching for his arm to get him to slow down.
"Careful, Hermione, people might see you touching me," Draco hissed, determined to keep going.
"I didn't mean it like that, and you know it," Hermione insisted, panting.
"What did you mean than?" Draco asked, derisively.
"I just hate all the attention," Hermione replied, still tugging at Draco's arm. "And for your information, I hated it when they were staring at me for being Harry's best friend as well."
"You sure about that?" Draco asked, mockingly. He refused to meet her eyes, not slowing down in the least.
"Yes," Hermione said determinedly, pulling harder at Draco's arm. Realising that he wouldn't stop trying to walk away from her, Hermione grabbed his cloak with her other hand, spinning him around in mid-step. Before Draco had the chance to shake her off, Hermione crashed her lips to his.
The kiss was everything but elegantly executed, and in the back of her mind, Hermione knew that tomorrow's edition of the Daily Prophet would more than likely feature a criticism of her sloppy kissing techniques. But for the moment, Hermione couldn't care less. Draco was kissing her back.
When they pulled apart, Draco's smirk was back in place.
"Quite a show for someone who dislikes public attention," he commented.
"Oh, shut up," Hermione grumbled, taking his hand and pulling him along.
