“The sun has just gone down, but the sand is still warm and we walk along the beach hand in hand.”

Draco had his eyes closed and listened to Hermione’s words intently. He could almost feel the warm summer breeze caressing his skin.

Almost.

A cramp in his leg reminded him that they weren’t a couple on vacation at some tropical resort. They were nothing but a lowly Muggle-born and an exposed Death Eater spy, captured in a dark and cold dungeon somewhere in England.

Pretending that they were some place else, a place a lot sunnier and more comfortable than their cell, had been Granger’s newest way of distracting Draco from the pain. His leg was broken badly, not to mention the dozen or so other injuries he had accumulated.

Absently, Draco wondered if the fact that nobody had found the time to kill them yet was any indication that the war was going badly for Voldemort. Then again, maybe the Dark Lord had just decided to let them rod slowly. They would die without him lifting a finger anyway. Sooner rather than later.

Draco shifted slightly to elevate some of the pain in his leg. It probably was infected already. He suppressed a moan and continued to listen to Hermione’s soothing voice. But he doubted that he would ever get the chance to go on that vacation with her.
