A/N: This was supposed to be my entry for a drabble challenge, but it’s more than twice as long as it’s supposed to be and doesn’t fulfil any of the prompts. Don’t know what happened. Draco just wouldn’t shut up. :)

When Draco invited Hermione to lunch she was instantly suspicious. They were colleagues at the Ministry of Magic, but they generally weren’t in the habit of spending their lunch time together. Truth be told, even years after the end of the war, they still couldn’t stand each other.

Even more so, when they first had to work alongside in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, the animosity between Draco and Hermione had been so obvious that their Department Head threatened to fire them both if they couldn’t find a common ground. Ever since then they were careful to say hello to each other whenever they met in the hallway and a superior was present, and both made an effort to be as professional as possible when they had a joined project. But they never spend any time together outside of work.

Until Draco had asked Hermione to lunch. Since they were in hearing distance of their Department Head, who was always keeping a very close eye on them, Hermione didn’t dare refuse Draco’s invitation. She strongly suspected Draco had counted on that.

Hermione’s suspicion only intensified when he voluntarily paid for lunch-without making a comment about her inferior heritage or his family’s wealth. When he bought her desert and she couldn’t detect any trace of poison in her pudding, Hermione finally burst.

“Spill it, what do you want?”

Draco’s impression of an innocent man was Oscar-worthy. “Hermione, sweetheart, most beautiful of…”

“Whatever it is that you want, Malfoy, the answer is no,” Hermione cut him off resolutely. She than swallowed the last bite of her pudding and got up to return to work.

“So you will not, not go to the Ministry’s charity ball with me?” Draco asked.

Hermione blinked for a second. She had expected him to ask for a favour, but she had thought it would be something like doing some of his work, covering for him while he spend a week on vacation or possibly helping him with illegal matters. Dating hadn’t crossed her mind.

However, Hermione recovered her posture quickly. “Nice try. But even if my only dating choices were you, the wizard who invented Bubotuber Pus and then experimented on himself or Filch, I’d still not go out with you.”

Draco didn’t seem put off by her refusal. If anything, he looked interested. “Who would you chose? Filch or the Pus guy?”

“Does that really matter?”

“I guess not. What matters is that you need to go on a date with me.”

Hermione could only roll her eyes. His persistence was beginning to annoy her. “Why?”

“Because I bet Weasley that I could date any witch I want, and he said that’s a lie because you would never go out with me.”

Hermione shook her head in disgust. Men. “And why would I care if you lose a bet against Ron?”

“Because if I win, you’re ex-boyfriend loses?” Draco replied hopefully.

Hermione snorted. “Do you really think I’m that petty?”

“I don’t know…” Draco replied, and Hermione didn’t like the sly smirk that spread over his face. “He also said that you are way too timid to go out with a guy that isn’t safe. Aparrently you aren’t really up for anything adventurous.”

“Excuse me?”

“Just what he said…” Draco trailed of, doing his innocent impression again.

“What does the winner get?” Hermione asked after a little pause.

“A hundred galleons,” Draco replied.

“Which you are going to donate to charity, right?”

“Shall I pick you up at eight?” Draco asked gleefully. The innocent look was gone, replaced by a triumphant smile.

“The Foundation of Wizarding War Orphans awaits your donation,” Hermione said sternly.

“Who cares about the hundred galleons? Can you imagine Weasley’s face when I get to the charity ball with you on my arm?”

“I’m only doing this for the orphans.”

“Keep telling yourself that.”
