The lights in the room dimmed, making the stage lights seem brighter than they should. The girls’ entrance was as showy as their costumes. The sequined cloth caught the light, drawing the audience’s attention to select parts of the ladies’ anatomy.

Smiles were plastered to their faces as they gyrated their hips, their eyes dull as they slid down the poles.

None of them refused the money that was tucked into their costume straps. To them, it did not matter if it came at the end of the month in the form of a cheque, or if it was coupled with wandering hands snaking down to cop a feel. After all, green was green, and green paid the bills.

The raunchy song faded away as the girls returned backstage, some blowing flying kisses to the audience along the way. He saw her give one of the men a seductive wink before ducking behind the curtains. She might have seen his wallet; it was rather fat.

He watched as she sank into her seat in front of the mirror, removing the bills from her bra, from her panties. He saw her release her hair from her ponytail, her beautiful face contorting in disgust, eyes flash in self-loathing. She looked up at her reflection, her hands balling into fists, crushing the notes she held.

A scream tore from her throat, filled with frustration and desperation and grief.

He had once told her that she would not need to do this anymore, that he would take care of her for the rest of their lives together. She had laughed and pulled him down for a tender kiss.

Then one of his students set the chemistry lab on fire. He had managed to get all his students out, but had been trapped inside the building when a beam fell from the ceiling, blocking the only exit.

Thankfully, he had been the only casualty that day.

He watched as she hurled the crumpled notes at her reflection, streaks of mascara running down her face. One of the staff called out to the dancers, telling them that it was ten minutes before showtime.

Wordlessly, she gathered up the bills and stuffed them into her purse. She hurriedly redid her makeup and hair, getting off her seat to file onstage once again.

Left alone backstage, Naoki let out a frustrated scream of his own.
