here and
here. I don't know how this happened, but as with most of my works, I attribute most of the content to sleep deprivation.
=======================
Naoto had never liked ghosts.
Well, ghosts in general were alright, he supposed. Being in Heaven all this while had taught him that.
To be more precise, he didn’t like the malevolent ones. Thankfully, the occasional escapees from Hell were quickly apprehended by the demons on duty, and sent back to where they came from.
“Sorry for the inconvenience caused. We will deal with him accordingly. Are you alright?” A tall demon was peering down at him.
Ah. That was embarrassing.
Naoto quickly stood up from the corner that he was huddled in and brushed himself off.
“Thanks for responding so quickly, as always.”
“Don’t mention it. It’s my duty, after all.”
That height, that build. Looks familiar.
“Say, officer. Haven’t I seen you before?” Naoto put on his best quizzical look.
“I may have come by to attend to a similar case some time back. Pardon me if I don’t recognize you; there have been many cases that I have attended to in the past century or so. Have a good day.”
=======================
“AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”
“Relax, relax. We’ve got the culprit.” Naoto peeked out from under his wing only to see that tall demon crouching just outside of the cupboard he had shut himself in.
“You’re sure he’s gone?”
“Very sure. Come on, up you get. Easy does it.” A large hand helped the angel up.
“We need to stop meeting each other like this.” Naoto grinned weakly, still slightly shaken by the near encounter with another spirit.
“Once again, we are terribly sorry for the inconvenience. If there’s anything we can do…”
“It’d be great if you didn’t let any escape.”
“You’re right. I will speak to the lesser demons about their lax in security. It is getting out of hand.”
As the demon turned to leave, Naoto called out to him.
“Say, I never got your name.”
The demon paused for the slightest moment before answering.
“You can call me Naoki.”
“Thanks for your help, Naoki. I’m Naoto, by the way.”
The sunny smile on his face remained long after the demon had taken flight.
=======================
Barely a month later, Naoto answered his door only to find Naoki awkwardly standing there.
“Oh hello. No spirits here today, thank goodness. What brings you here?”
“I… er… happened to be passing by, and wanted to update you about the security issue that had troubled you previously.” The words tumbled clumsily off the demon’s tongue.
“… Oh. That. Would you like to come in?”
“That won’t be necessary. I wouldn’t want to intrude-”
Seeing the taller demon’s bat-like wings unfurl slightly for flight, Naoto instinctively grabbed his wrist.
“Nonsense. Come in. I’ll get you a coffee.”
=======================
“Wait, so you’re saying that you asked your imps to let those specific spirits escape on purpose so you could come here to visit.”
“I’m truly sorry about that, it was a rash decision on my part, and highly unprofessional of me to do so. But it would have been really awkward if I had just dropped by…” Naoki’s voice trailed off as he dropped his gaze to the table.
For a moment, Naoto simply stared incredulously at the demon wringing his hands before him.
“Don’t hate me.”
Whoever knew that this demon with the stern face could put on such an imploring look?
Naoto could not help but burst out into an uncontrolled fit of laughter.
=======================
Looking at his bathroom mirror with horrified amusement, Naoto could not help but think that he really should be used to this by now.
Words were slowly forming on the reflective surface, made by a substance that resembled fresh blood.
Judging from the source, the angel would not be surprised if the substance was indeed actual blood.
He would just be slightly mortified, that’s all.
Neatly (as far as blood could get anyway) punctuated, the message read: “Naoto-san, please remember to towel your hair dry properly after your shower. Otherwise, you might catch a cold.”
He really needed to speak to Naoki regarding his method of long-distance communication.
=======================
“But that’s the only way I can send messages from Hell.” Naoki’s horrified look met Naoto’s semi-amused one.
“Oh, I didn’t know that. You demons don’t have telephones?”
“We do, but I… erm… didn’t get your number.”
“You didn’t ask.”
=======================
It took Naoto a week to figure out that meeting Naoki in person was a lot better than receiving texts from him.
It took Naoki four months to ask Naoto out on a proper date.
=======================
It was meant to be a simple peck on the lips.
When they broke apart for air, Naoki found his arms wrapped around Naoto’s waist, while its owner hovered two feet above his own porch.
“So. Wanna come in for a cup of coffee?” A smirk played on the corners of Naoto’s lips.
Naoki swallowed.
“Sure. Why not?”
=======================
“You have really beautiful wings.” Long fingers traced the feathered edges lightly.
“Yours aren’t too shabby either.”
Face nuzzled in the crook of the other’s neck, Naoto did not see the soft smile that spread across Naoki’s face.
