Dear kind writer,
Please accept my apologies for the generic nature of this post - I put all the special details in at AO3, but this is more detailed background info. So, if you want to know what I like to read... here's the scoop:
I love challenging myself to write in new and exciting fandoms, and my reward is lovely, lovely fic. If you're writing for me, thank you! I've tried to list the fandoms I request most often in this post, so you can get a sense of my likes.
My general preferences are simple. As you will see, I am all about relationships. It's what got me into fic and it's how I think. Which isn't to say I don't love a good gen piece that lets me into the world of my favourite characters - that makes me very happy, too. I love humour, fluff is fun, and angst can be a real pleasure when it helps me understand the core of a character.
While I'm a hardcore romantic shipper, I believe that two characters can be extremely close emotionally without a romantic bond and that sometimes that's the strongest relationship in their life. Examples include Joan&Sherlock, John&Sherlock, Harry&Hermione, Sam&Callen, Amy&Eleven, Bo&Kenzi - these are the best of best friends, true connection, and I love that in stories.
I am pro-polyamory in reasonably canon situations - a canon hetero character would have two lovers of the opposite sex, while a canon ambiguous character might have one of each. I don't think polyamory has to mean threesome, it can mean multiple lovers for one person. For example, I completely ship Alaric/Elena/Damon where they all sleep in one bed, but on Haven, I see Audrey being involved with both Nathan and Duke but not the two men getting together romantically/sexually.
I don't like dub-con and won't read non-con. I really don't like infidelity, in real life or fic. I'm not into anything too violent, but if it moves the story along or is part of some hot bdsm, sure. More extreme kinks are not for me, but I'm fine with pron in general. I'm not big on out of universe AUs (Vampire Suits! um, no) or non-canon slash (though I think plenty of characters are bi, see below).
But really, really - I like being inside characters' heads and hearts. I'm happiest when reading well-rounded characters doing interesting things, be it adventures, romance, or complex dark fic.
Witness my love of rare-pairs and/or underloved fandoms:
favourite characters: Duchess, Jack
Duchess is just... cool. Icy cool. She's sad, though, in a lot of ways. I wonder about her a lot: is she a pawn, is she a player, does she love Jack or just want him for power? I like imagining her caring for Jack Heart in a true, honest way - either as a friend/sister or a romantic partner. I don't like thinking she is weak... I doubt weak people survived long in the Red Queen's court.
Still, it's the anti-romance. She was trained to manipulate him. He lied to he and treated her like a disposable doll. They should hate each other, but in the warped world of Wonderland nothing is as it should be. Which is why I love it and why the idea of seeing these two try to relate to each other is so appealing.
Plus - Wonderland! The perfect backdrop to either angst or romance. Are they friends, enemies, reluctant allies, lovers? A little bit of everything? I'd love to find out.
favourite characters: Oliver Queen, Felicity Smoak, John Diggle, Tommy Merlyn, Thea Queen
Arrow is all banter and action, so I like the idea of flirtation and adventure (with a touch of angst, if you like writing that). As well, I'm getting to know these characters, so backstory or exploring characters is also awesome.
Ship-wise, I love the Arrow-cave dynamic. There's so much awesome going on between Ollie and Felicity - the UST is thick in the air and will explode someday. Felicity and Diggle have more of a friends-to-lovers vibe, I think, that makes me smile. (Deep down, I envision both the boys loving Felicity and her happily balancing relationships with both of them...)
Upstairs, Thea is all sass and bite, with a nice undertone of insecurity. I like her relationship with Oliver, and I love the idea that someday she'll fight at his side as a hero in her own right.
favourite characters: Kiera, Alec, Sonya, Betty
I love this show so much. It's complicated and creative, full of mystery and strong characters. These are smart, capable people who are emotionally vulnerable for various reasons. Each has their own battles to fight (external and internal). I want to know so much more about all of them.
Betty's the easiest one here: we don't know much about her, aside from her tech genius (well, for a normal person - she's no Alex) and her crush on Carlos (I approve of this ship). I admire her for being a techie and for being a woman of colour in a white male world. What's the story there?
Sonya is tough and principled. I have to wonder what made her that way. Did she suffer in the future's past? How did Kagame find/recruit her? Where are her true loyalties? What, if anything, could change her allegiances? (and secretly I wonder, how much does she hate Kellogg, the man of no principals? enough for hateship?)
Alec is a mystery to me, in a lot of ways. I wonder what motivates him to help Kiera and how he truly feels about Liber8 and his step-brother's actions. Does Alec have a moral centre, or is he just about tech? In Season 2, what does Alec know?
Finally, Kiera. I have so many thoughts about Kiera that I won't get into. A question that always sits with me, though: what is it that makes her fight every day? does she really, truly believe she'll make it back to her future-past?
I particularly like the main pair, Kiera and Alec. Neither of them really belong or fit in, and that makes them great together - as friends or (I hope) more. My only for sure squick is romantic Keira/Kellogg. I just can't handle it (to me it's a complete disaster in the making).
favourite characters: Adelle DeWitt, Laurence Dominic, Topher, Alpha
I did a rewatch of this series with the DeWitt/Dominic comm and was reminded of how mind-bending this show is. The possibilities seem endless: Doll-fics, House history, post-Thoughtpocolypse, or even post-Thoughtcure. And the characters are so complicated and emotionally messed up. I want to hug them and smack them in equal measure, most of the time (except Echo/Caroline - her I mostly want to smack).
Anything Dollhouse makes me happy. If it involves Topher being a brat, DeWitt/Dominic fight-flirting, or Alpha being Alpha, I will be ecstatic.
favourite characters: A.J. and Deb with a side of Gina
Every time I rewatch this film, I'm amazed at how these A.J. and Deb suit each other, as friends and more. Certainly more than the people they ended up with. I wish that there were more fixit fics where one or both of them clues in to how wrong their choices have been and how right a relationship between them could be. And Gina is just psycho and fun, so there should be more of her in the fic world.
favourite characters: Um, everyone? Yeah, but especially Arkady, Alcina, Sam and Danni
Oh, how I loved this show. Arkady, the neurotic grand master who ferrets out actions, and Alcina, the practical, capable one who understands hearts. They are the heads of the strange little family on this show. I see such a good balance, a strong bond, between them. Maybe it's deep friendship, maybe it's more....
Sam and Danni, well, they're like the kids in this gang. Brother and sister? Maybe - that has lots of story (and banter) potential. Or perhaps a mischievous Arkady wants to see something more - someone sensible and steady for Danni, someone fun and worldly for Sam. Arkady, and a reluctant Alcina, as cupids? Just another adventure at the Huxley.
favourite characters: Walter, the Alt's, Astrid in any form, Nina
My favourite part of the Fringe universes is not the Peter/Olivia relationship or the weird science - it's the endless possibilities presented by the alternate universe and the alternate timeline. So the Alternate Olivia and Lincoln - harder and more cynical than 'our' versions - they fascinate me. Similarly, the Alternate Astrid, with her unusual skills, is a source of great speculation. I like the idea of throwing 'our' characters (more vulnerable, more emotional) into their world, or imagining what's going on in the Alt-verse before or during the times the universes interacted. And Broyles/Nina just makes sense to me, regardless of universe or timeline (or shape-shifter allegiance, come to think of it).
And truly, my favourite part of Fringe is Walter, but he exists in a romance-free zone in my head. Still, if he's the in the story it would be super cool!
favourite characters: Mike, Johnny, Charlie, Briggs
This show totally hooked me. Complicated people, crazy situations, sandy beaches... Awesome.
I would like to see inside their heads, these agents of Graceland. Personally, I see them as platonic, loving family - though I do ship Mike/Charlie at times if you are interested in including something romantic or sexy. I would prefer no slash or house-poly.
favourite characters: Johanna, Gale, Haymitch
After the War comes the Peace - who knew that peace would be harder? These three went through hell alongside Peeta and Katniss, so what is their ending? Is it happy? Do they find people who can live with them? Can they live with themselves?
I think they're pretty battered and broken by now, and that can make it hard to start life anew. Sometimes it's easier with someone who's been there. Sometimes it's harder. Happy ending or angst or both would all work for me here.
favourite characters: Rachel Brooks, Ava Crowder, Tim Gutterson, Boyd Crowder
Suffice to say that anything Justified makes me happier than happy. Love those laconic, sarcastic, sexy backwoods Kentucky folk so, so, much! Their wit, their quirky moral code, their deep loyalties… all delicious.
Words cannot do justice to the kick-ass that these ladies are. Rachel is one of my favourite characters on Justified, even though she is only in every third episode. She's wry and witty, sharp and bitter, and she stands up to the assholes and racists in her life with a steel spine. Let me in to her head and I will be over the moon. (ship her with quiet, stoic, sexy Tim and I'll love you forever)
Ava is my other favourite character. She is so very amazing, a woman of no education or training who has carved out a strong position in a man's world. I love her evolving relationship with Boyd, which strikes me as the most romantic and respect-filled partnership on the show. Her role as whorehouse manager fascinates me... I hate the job but I admire how she does it. There's so much to Ava, anything you write would be a gift.
favourite characters: Parker, Eliot
My guilty pleasure (friend)ship. She's insane; he's grounded. She's perky; he's surly. They make about as much sense as peanut butter and pickles, but still... the potential for hijinks is just so high.
favourite characters: Kenzi, Lauren , Tamsin , Dyson
These are tough, self-reliant ladies. They are smart, sassy, and take no crap from the world, even when it kicks them in the teeth. Dyson's there because of his dry wit, his wolfish loyalty, and his complex relationships with all three of these ladies.
Kenzi. I love Kenzi so very, very much. Everything about her makes me happy. I love her friendship with Bo, her insistence on being equal to her fae friends, her bromance with Hale and Trick. Ship-wise, I'm all about Team Special K! I don't know how to explain my love for the laconic wolf-man and the hyperactive thief except to say that they are what each other isn't and yet they understand each other's pain and fears... Really, any exploration of their connection would make me happier than Kenzi with a new pair of boots.
Lauren is a totally underloved character in my opinion. She's super smart, stronger than steel, and loves Bo very, very much. I think she has had a really tough go of it. It would thrill me to learn more about Lauren, not as part of Lauren and Bo or as Lauren the Fae's toy... just Lauren.
Tamsin, the valkerie. So much fight, so much damage. I love her sense of humour, her dark fae politics, her mysterious backstory, her new existence... I think in the old form, she had good rapport with Dyson, and I imagine that if she ever moved past the 'human' factor, she would have been buddies with Kenzi. Now, it's anyone's guess. In my head, I imagine that she, Kenzi, and Lauren could have awe-inspiring and deeply snarky adventures together.
favourite characters: Morgana, Merlin, Leon, Gwaine, Gaius
Powerful women and their toys... I have always liked Morgana, before, during, and after the magic angst. Even evil Morgana holds a spark of human need that I really enjoy. And while I primarily love her with Merlin, I can see her with her life-long servant Leon or with joking, cynical Gwaine. I would love to see that spark of need be fed by affection (even if she has to start it with a spell) until she swings back towards humanity. Although I doubt she'll be entirely healed, ever, as the damage goes so deep.
favourite characters: Nell, G Callen, Kensi, Deeks, Hetty
NCIS:LA is a bit of fun - an excellent opportunity for adventure and explosions. I really enjoy the banter and found-family nature of the team, as well as the ridiculousness of the show's plots.
My main ship on this show is Nell/G Callen and I'm always looking for new visions of their world. I also ship Kensi/Deeks, because their banter is pretty irresistible. Hetty's here too, because I imagine she'd have something to say (or do) about it all. If that's not your style, though, I'm all for smart, witty adventures!
favourite characters: Nikita, Owen, Alex, Birkhoff
Adventures of ex-assassins and super-spies are fun and all, but this show is all about a bunch of damaged romantics for me. I think all these people just want someone to tell them that they're not bad people and that someone's got their back. And then they will go on awesome adventures saving the world from super-villains.
I have shipped Nikita/Owen ever since Owen showed up back in Montreal. They have both experienced the death of their non-Division love and it was the other person's fault (Owen killed Daniel, while Nikita brought on the attack that killed Emily). They both have murky pasts, full of violence and dubious choices (from what we know). And frankly, they banter well and look great together. So if you want to break up Michael and Nikita and set this ship sailing, I would be so very thrilled.
Alex and Birkhoff are also awesome characters, so flawed and conflicted while still very strongly centred. I like them as friends, as sidekicks (to each other or Nikki), and as lovers. Really, they're just interesting in any arrangement or adventure.
favourite characters: Abby, Matt, Emily, Becker, Lester, Jess
Why this show? Because dinosaurs! And also interesting characters with complicated emotional lives, who live crazy adventures. I'm all for anomaly expeditions, dino-wrangling, and (of course) shipping.
Matt/Abby: They've both lived in other times, fought hard to survive. Neither of them can forget. I thought these two had a great connection. I'd love to see an exploration of that connection - the zoologist turned fighter and the spy turned hero. However, I find infidelity a big squick, so if you could find a way around that, please...
Jess/Lester is a kink of mine. There's something so fun about their 'fights' and how opposite yet the same they are. I totally imagine them arguing their way into a relationship. Again with the infidelity squick for Lester, though.
And Emily and Becker are recent favourites, because they are both tough fighters with a sensitive side. They might geek out over weapons and combat techniques, or maybe he's a secret history buff... I don't know, but I'm sure anything you write will charm me to bits.
favourite charaters: Ken Leeds, Ange Finch, Toby Nance, Mac Rendell
Why this show? Because dinosaurs! Dinosaurs in Canada! I like that it's light and fun, with moments of real character evolution and depth. I only wish they'd had more time to explore the consequences of the military involvement (though I'm happy to retcon out Mac's sacrifice somehow). Any adventure story before the finale or creative take on the potential new timeline would be exciting.
In PNW, I'm a serious lover of the brotp and work-otp. Here, I picked Ken and Ange for their awesomely awkward yet effective partnership and Toby and Mac for their amazing friendship. I do also go with romantic shipping here, too, but my favourite thing about this show was always the hijinks and friendship banter so if you're not ship inclined that's totally cool.
(besides, my OTP is Mac/Dylan, actually. In case you wanted to know)
favourite characters: Sherlock, Molly, Moriarty, Lestrade
There's not much to say here, except that I really like Molly when she's characterized as a smart, capable woman rendered completely idiotic by the gorgeous man who swans in and out of her lab. I do think she's a bit of dip, it's clear in canon, but I often wonder why - disappointments in life? Shyness and low self-esteem? Something more complex? (ties well to Moriarty shipping)
Anyway, I like a good Molly story, preferably one where she gets a happy ending - with or without a guy.
favourite characters: Rina, Nala
Adventure show! Lack of shirts all ‘round! Generally the most ridiculous and impossible plot premise ever… so lotsof fun. I liked the madcap adventure aspect of this show the best. It was never good at heavy, emotional stuff, but ludicris hijinks - definitely.
I miss Nala. I wish she hadn't left the ship, because I enjoyed her regal presence on board. She was an excellent foil for Sinbad and she had great rapport with Gunnar (lovely pair or OT3, by the way), and I think she would/could have eventually really bonded with the crew as family. They did suggest the Providence could go back for her... maybe it did?
Rina is just a bundle of fun. She's scrappy and cynical, fiesty and smart. I like how she completely disconcerts Anwar and how she is buddies with Cook sometimes. I know that canon is to ship her with Anwar, but I like her and Sinbad as thief buddies - that's a strong bond. I wonder what crazy scrapes she has gotten into in past, or what adventures she might drag the team into down the line.
favourite characters: Chloe, Rush, Eli, James
I loved this show because it threw together people who would never have spoken in normal life.
Eli and James? I don't know why I like this idea, but I think it's got something to do with how much they both hurt because of Chloe and Scott. But they also riff against each other: she's military, he's a brat; she's confident and strong, he's nervous and twitchy; she's experienced, he lived with his mom until he ended up on a spaceship.
And then there's my OTP. This show was all about being smart and saving the tiny world-let that was Destiny. Both Rush and Chloe did that on many occasions but got all kinds of grief in the process. And they have a bond, not just the alien thing, but in their ability to be observant - him cynically, her with more compassion. Even in non romantic settings, they play so well against each other.
favourite characters: Harvey, Donna, Jessica
I love this show because it is witty, bright, sexy, and well-dressed. Just like its main characters. My favourite relationships on this show are between Harvey and the ladies - Donna and Jessica.
As for types of story, well, I strongly ship Donna/Harvey, while I love Jessica as Harvey's mentor/tormentor in that way only older sisters can be. As much as I love the mentor/apprentice bond between Harvey and Mike, I do not ship Harvey/Mike. I also enjoy the bantering bond between Louis and Rachel, but could never see that being more than friendship.
favourite characters: Tosh and Owen
Unrequited, barely-canon love is my thing. Ditto awkward geeks. Ditto jerks with a heart of gold. These two, with their stunningly tragic stories, are the epitome of all that. I would love for what was done in the show (undead Owen, dead Tosh) to have never happened. Or for it to un-happen. Or some other sneaky way for this pair to find an ending (happy, of course) together rather than through a comms link. So basically, fix-it fic.
favourite characters: Alex, Tony
This is a wonderful British television show about a profiler and the cops he assists. The show is strong for several reasons, but the flawed and irritating Tony Hill is why I love it. I particularly like his dynamic with Alex because it is very much a friendship with possibility, but not as much tension as there was with Carol. I don't care if they are romantically linked or if it's an equally strong platonic tie, but they work well together and there's a *need* there. Oh, and the secondary characters are also great - Kevin and Paula are meant for each other, even the show writers knew that.
I also prefer Alex because I think she brought a lot of complexity to the show and to the team. Her family life always stood as a nice contrast to the 'team family' that she, Tony, Kevin, and Paula make.
