Happy Birthday, Sam. <3

For Sam's birthday, finchandsparrow and I watched 2x12 "Nightshifter" and 4x13 "After School Special" in his honor, and I love. Sam and Dean. So, so, so, so, so, so, so much. Absolutely no one is doing it like them. We had a bunch of thoughts that I said we should save, but then I proceeded to not save them (Teleparty doesn't save its chats as far as I know).

I don't know if you've had the experience of being there as a series background and foundation are being built, but there's such a sense of discovery as new storylines and ideas come to light--that puzzle piece falling into place as it interlocks with previous eps and leaves open edges for more in future eps. But that was a big part of what I loved about 1&2. There's no way to describe the anxious wait while the impala ticked, cooling, in that field as we waited to find out if the series would be picked up for another season, or if this was just the way we lost the Winchesters forever. The discoveries and the puzzle piecing, along with the quirks and personalities of the actors coming through in the characters--exhilarating. I shouldn't say this out loud, but that sense of discovery, and the feeling of being with other likeminded viewers was all so wonderful. I've always felt sorry for the fans who assert the series didn't start till S3 and angels, because they missed the genesis. Something about those early eps... I love the show's ( ... )

The discoveries and the puzzle piecing, along with the quirks and personalities of the actors coming through in the characters These are the exact things that I feel like people who malign the later seasons end up missing out on. Because to me it's like, LMAO I don't care about the British Men of Letters or Dick Roman either, but have you SEEN the undertow, the emotional undercurrents, the seasoning of Sam and Dean? I feel like the entire 15 years we are always coming to know Sam and Dean because they are moving targets. They are wonderful in S2 and wonderful in S14, and at either end of the temporal spectrum I am constantly thinking, "oh man, this is the only place you can get this [insert particular vintage of Sam and Dean]," whether that be the newness of them at the beginning or the depth of the patina they acquire by the end.

fans who assert the series didn't start till S3 and angels

That is not often the take I hear, but I can certainly imagine which neighborhood in fandom it comes from. XD

Your SPN posts always make me so happy but I especially enjoy when you talk about the early seasons because I've actually seen those and can nod along with actual understanding and also now I'm thinking about this too.
