Did you guys hear about this thing? Apparently Amazon discovered that one of their Kindle versions of Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm wasn't supposed to be available on the Kindle, so they deleted all the copies off of the readers of the people who had already bought them.

NY Times article about it.Of all the authors to pick, too. I could not even ( Read more... )

(stolen from slashdot) In response, Amazon customer service replied: "We've always been at war with Eastasia."

I would not be shocked if a rather large class-action comes out of this. This is utter stupidity.

Yeah... just because it's easier to reposess something digital doesn't mean they should. Also, that paragraph near the end is why I'll never bother with such a thing. I like lending books and selling books and borrowing books way too much. Also, owning books. Did you see the recent Penny Arcade comic about Kindle?

Yeah... I mean, I sympathize slightly with the position they were put in, but at the same time, they should check to make sure a vendor has the rights to offer something before they let people buy it. Uh, DUH, anyone?

I read about it from David Pogue's column. I was thinking about the kindle because I print so much paper for documents available as .pdfs. Sadly the article is a constant reminder that for a lot of digital media we the consumers do not in fact own what we buy. I don't think I'll get a kindle in any event.

Thanks for the link to the article. It's an interesting read... and i haven't been convinced to move onto that whole digital generation all together.... i detest the idea of having to buy digital copies of objects without even having them in my hands. I find it amusing only because my boyfriends mom just got a kindle for her birthday.
