In which I enter the era of the Smart Phone

Jan 06, 2011 10:48

Playing with my shiny new Android, I begin to suspect that I am not really the target user for Smart Phones. Don't get me wrong, I like it very much. But it has all these interactive map functions and it can play videos and store music and who knows what else that I don't really know how to use not because I can't figure it out but simply because I ( Read more... )

me vs. technology

I just went and resent my twitter password because it had been so long since I tweeted that I couldn't remember the password. *facepalm* Do you know if there's an app I should download or something? I'm still so out of my depth with the whole app thing.

There are indeed many twitter apps for android. I adore Tweet Deck, and will not even tell you about any of the others, because you should use Tweet Deck. Ok, there's also the official Twitter app. I like TD because it saves my place so in the morning I can read all the tweets from overnight starting from where I left off (I am so addicted to Twitter). But on the official Twitter app it's like how it is on twitter.com, where you read from the top down, which is maybe better if you only check it every once in a while.

Don't worry, you'll stop feeling quite so old in a few days. :)

My oldest daughter combined all her Christmas money from relatives, and bought herself an iPod Touch. Which, silly me, I thought was a music player. Turns out that it's also a camera (stills and videos) and a media player, and if there's a wireless connection available, it sends and receives texts, it's a videophone, it can access various things on the internet, ad infinitum. My 14-year-old is checking STOCKS from her back pocket in the school gym.

I'm a DINOSAUR.

Yes, my husband got himself one of those. I think it's everything *except* a phone.

My MIL has an Iphone and we spent a long time leading up to it always saying, "If someone had an Iphone we could look that up." She still does not ever remember what she has in her pocket.

On the other hand. We recently got droids and at first, I would forget, but our habit of saying, "If someone had and Iphone...." was really handy. Out of habit we'll start, "If someone had....OH!"

And then you become addicted and Google eats your brain.

It's really not a phone, it's a computer. With Internet. I don't have to carry a laptop around nearly as often.

I know, the use of the word "phone" for these things is a gross oversimplification. I've heard "mobile device" thrown around a bit, but while it's much more accurate, it also seems unlikely to catch on and replace "phone."

I've got an iPod Touch (no phone, though it can be finagled into one), and had the worst time deciding what to call it. I refuse to go around saying "my Touch" all the time, iPod doesn't really cover it, and iPod Touch is too long.

I finally settled on my Shiny, hearking back to the awesome "Silmarillion in 1000 Words", though it means I occasionally have to explain myself.

Getting a Music File as a Ringtone

1) Get the music as an mp3.

2) Get the music file onto your phone (via USB or even just sending it to yourself in an email). Save it.

3) Go to "Applications"

4) Go to "Music"

5) Find the song in the list. Hold your finger down on it when selecting it. A menu should pop up.

6) From the menu, select "Set as Ringtone"

And you're done! (This is how I got the Imperial March to play whenever my mother calls me.)
