there's lots i could comment on here, but there's so much fucking beaurecratic nonsense

to paraphrase it:
"the commissioner must not issue a warrant without approval of a judge, unless he wants to, in which case a judge has 24 hours to approve it"

... at which point whatever warrant was issued would have surely already been used to search or raid whatever premises they wanted to anyway

furthermore, it can be issued orally. essentially, all the commissioner has to do is give word of mouth and the police are authorised to do whatever the fuck they want.

and shit.. i'm only up to the first bit

if terrorism were as big a threat as everyone were making out to be, i could understand the need for such urgency... but... well... i guess if (when?) the cops start exploiting these laws left right centre it'll be evident enough as to why they shouldn't have been passed.

everything is just too convenient for comfort. i just think it's safer to question than to believe.

my mate said a good quote once - "those who trade a little freedom for a little security, lose both"

The real quote is...

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

hmm. interesting points. what do you think about the announcement of a "specific threat" being made about Australia, but then Howard didnt actually say what this specific threat was. and this was a week before the bill was passed.
