Besides, if you "turn off all the lights", wouldn't you also turn off the other distractions that also make life worth living (loved ones, pretty little flowers, Steak & Shake, etc...)
With that second paragraph, it's that "worth living" part that I'm talking about. I know people who have dedicated their lives to their family and managed a decent academic career. I know people who have dedicated their lives to their academic career and managed a decent family. I guess I shouldn't make the choice so dichotomous, but it seems like if you turn one down, the other gets brighter.
