In my morning internet ritual of checking email, Myspace, Facebook the New York Times and IMDB news, I've seen three references to people saying that Either A.) they are too good for TV, or B.) TV is ruining acting in theater and film.
I'll admit that TV isn't as "classy" as theater (It's entertainment.. who said classy was neccessarily good? case in point: Avenue Q). But I would hardly say it's a lower art form than movies have been, especially in the past 20 years, when TV truly started getting big.
The one thing I see about television is that it's a medium that can appeal to a broader audience. Movie tickets are expensive, theater tickets even more so.. and don't get me started on the opera and ballet. Because they tend to be more intellectual (more spec. with this one, theater, ballet and opera), they appeal to to a more educated audience, which makes the higher ticket prices almost okay. Television, at its most basic level, costs the price of a television and rabbit ears for 10 years. which, many people in this country can't afford as it is.
*Tend* to be more intellectual is key.. there is so much TV out there that is WAY more quality than a lot of movies out there. I would use the Jackass movies as an example, but that was based on a TV show. but take House, or CSI, or Law and Order, anything on History channel or Discovery, Sopranos, The Wire. then compare it to some of the crappy movies from the 80s, the endless barage of sequels that started popping up in the 80s (and has hit a high point today) Grease 2, Fast Times at Ridgemont high (which admittedly i've never seen, but won't just because of all the bad stuff i'd heard about it) Soul Man... (the black face movie).
I figure Reality Television is part of what's bringing on a backlash to TV. Personally.. yea i think most of it sucks, (excuse me while i go watch America's Next Top Model :P) but people like seeing people who are just like them be famous, even if only for 15 seconds. It gives them hope they might have their 15 seconds..
So all of those people who think they are "Above" Television, or "Too good" for it. It's entertainment. and get the stick out of your ass, I've come to the conclusion that people who are too good for television are pretentious snobs who haven't actually thought about their opinion.
And.. HAPPY TURKEY DAY!
