But I've heard I've heard not-so-promising things about the endgame

aquahaute and I can echo that. The final dungeon is quite long - as I recall, it took her and me both over an hour - and while I think you can get out halfway through to save, you still have to walk all the way back to the midpoint (thus wearing down a bit from random battles on the way).

I gave up on the end game. I could get to Cloud of Darkness, but wasn't really coming close to beating her and I didn't feel like grinding to do so.
