And 1 1/2 hours later...

I finally got frustrated enough to once again look for better ISP in my area. Satellite is right out both due to weather and limits on data usage (Yes I suck a lot of data per day). So I recalled Verizon having a wireless home connection but didn't recall the details so I went to there site. I knew I couldn't just enter my cell number as it is ( Read more... )

Hehe, Yeah, you'd think they could use that. Apparently they don't use either of those however. I offered GPS and he said that wouldn't help. I'm guessing they are set up only by street address as that is how their lines are run.

A good solution if it's offered there is WiMAX. It's similar to cell in that it's wireless. But it's a single tall tower and can cover a 50 mile range. With a combination of narrow burst reception and narrow beams, it can pump lots of data quickly to lots of people in an area. This is being used in the rural areas -- a single WiMAX tower is far cheaper than putting down Coax to a couple thousand houses spread over such a huge area. The tech has a small latency that may be too long for some gaming like WoW and such. But for watching videos or most web use, it's fine.

That very well could be what they are offering. Problem is I can't get any info off the web site without giving my location, which in their database doesn't exist. I'd hoped to stop at a store today but ran out of time. As WoW is/was one of my on line recreation places I'll have to ask them that directly. I'll let you know once I've made that stop.

Well, Jaxx plays WoW on his WiMAX system. So I know it can be done and is possible.
