The death of Neil Armstrong has prompted an outpouring of sorrow and tributes to the first human to set foot on the moon. Already the calls for some kind of lasting memorial to him have begun in the US and other places. If we really want a lasting memorial to his memory what would this modern day explorer himself want ( Read more... )

The ISS was designed and ready to go in 1990. But it had to be REDESIGNED because of an urgent problem here on earth...

The soviet union had collapsed, and suddenly there were lots of former soviet rocket scientists out of work -- people who would be willing to give nasty toys to Iran in order to feed their family. So the ISS was declared a joint project, and the scientists were put to work again in their own country at our expense. In that way, we simply traded money for security.

Most of the world does not know this. But this was the single most cost effective purchase of security in our lifetimes. We could have had the station up far earlier, but it was necessary to bring the Russians on board and give their designers something sane to build rather than make stuff for Iran. Thus we deprived the Jihadists of weapons without firing a single bullet.

If that is the case, and I won't argue either way, we should approach China as well as Russians this time. We need to get some humans off this rock and to a safe place before someone shows us just how stupid humans can be.
