The death of Neil Armstrong has prompted an outpouring of sorrow and tributes to the first human to set foot on the moon. The soviet union had collapsed, and suddenly there were lots of former soviet rocket scientists out of work -- people who would be willing to give nasty toys to Iran in order to feed their family. So the ISS was declared a joint project, and the scientists were put to work again in their own country at our expense. In that way, we simply traded money for security.
Most of the world does not know this. But this was the single most cost effective purchase of security in our lifetimes. We could have had the station up far earlier, but it was necessary to bring the Russians on board and give their designers something sane to build rather than make stuff for Iran. Thus we deprived the Jihadists of weapons without firing a single bullet.
