I got to the level of skill I have now by never being satisfied with my work but always wanting to do better. It's a habit now, and it's hard to just kick back and relax. Absinthe was supposed to be quick and simple to draw, then it turned insanely detailed. Rita has even tighter visual restrictions in place but oh geeze the narrative knots I plan to be tying are going to be hell to get right.
Learning to just kick back and have a good time with these hard-won skills ain't easy. I don't have any solutions for that. But I think this is a pretty normal state for a good artist to be in.
I'm definitely with you on the 'always want to be improving' part. Even if I'm not getting better, and I think I am, I wish to always be trying something new which eventually feeds back into other things I've done (if that sentence can even be graphed). It just feels -guilty- for things coming easier, you know?
Rita, I think, is in its way, better than Absinthe partially because it's not so insanely detailed. It has all the action, all the verve and seems to be more reasonable to make. This doesn't diminish Absinthe, it just means that you might be able to hit more realistic goals with Rita. All I know is that it's the most dynamic web comic I've seen and yet gives me some of the same design-y goosebumps that American Flagg gave me when it first came out.
