Berend Botje en de Leidse ontzetting

Yesterday this beautiful city celebrated its liberation from the Spanish siege in 1574. In the night of the 2nd of october, part of the city wall crashed down and morale being low in the spanish army due to wet feet (the dykes had been demolished and the water was closing in) combined with fear of a last stand by the famished inhabitants of Leiden ( Read more... )

Funny thing is, the Dutch probably never seen potatoes before. The potato was introduced in Europe in 1537 by Pizarro, so 40 years before the Leiden seige. Only during the 30 years of war (starting 1618) did the vegetable get introduced in Germany, while the british only knew about potatoes from 1587 onwards...
So if there was really potato in the hutsepot back then, it would probably have been the first potato the dutch ever saw...
