A week ago in Belgium, I was asked what a pepernoot was. Two times. Apparently, the good saint's helpers throw 'niknakjes' in het land below the Maas. Tasty, but strange. Another thing is that he throws peanuts and wallnuts. Maybe they got the peperNOTEN thing wrong. The little boy who was hit by a particularly big wallnut didn't really get what ( Read more... )

Like I said before: the reason why we throw nuts is because walnuts and peanuts are the last thing harvested in Autumn, and Saint Nick is in effect a celebration of the harvest.

The reason why we do nàot know pepernoten is because we have no Indian colonies, therefore no special herbs to put in our cookies...
