I Found That Essence Rare

I think I have made my views on religion reasonably clear. Despite an abiding respect for a number of sincere, spiritual people, I do not have any use for the concept of god, gods, or theistic belief systems. I find the very idea of faith problematic, as it purports to place some ideas beyond the realm of evaluation or change, insulating them from ( Read more... )

"I find the very idea of faith problematic, as it purports to place some ideas beyond the realm of evaluation or change, insulating them from criticism with a cynical veneer of reverence."

The only deal I have with this whole thing is the use of the word "faith"...I don't know, I keep looking at this sentence over and over and think that you simply mean "religion", or certain people's misuse of the word "faith" as your basis of using that particular word. Although I SEE what you are saying, it's so sad to me that I cannot use a word to describe what I believe without it having preconceived definitions. I think I'm just going to make up my own word.

But faith is just...ahhh! Not the right word. But it's so hard to explain what I am talking about.

Like okay, if someone were in the hospital and someone said, "I have faith they will get better", and completely ignored a medical professional's advice or prognosis (I'm just pulling a random example here) because they were going on "faith" and "faith alone", then maybe I could see the use of this word in this particular sentence because it does indeed "insulate"/gives a cynical vibe, etc...

But there are rational people with faith. Just so you know. Which I'm sure you do. Okay I'm shutting up now.
