While I love Livejournal and continue to use and read it, smaller updates have tended to gravitate towards Facebook since sadly that's where a lot of people gravitated. I don't like Facebook or its policies, but I have begrudgingly used it. Now Google+ is out, I have an account, and it looks to make a swell replacement for the kinds of things
