I need.. to get... out

See! she has a name now. I've been deliberately opening up slowly, before I hit any real plot.... more of a character development type deal, some developing faster than others and junk.

Anyway, hope j00 like

The next morning Jayden awoke, announcing his every move, should he find himself in another awkward situation. Assuming the coast was clear, he lethargically made his way to the dinner table to have breakfast, which had already been prepared for him. The woman was already sitting across the table smiling gingerly as took his seat. Jayden couldn’t help but feel like he had suddenly become a prisoner, watching the girl grab her knife and fork before reciting a silent prayer.

“So,” he started. He had barely taken a bite, though he couldn’t exactly remember the last time he had ever bothered to have a real breakfast. “Do you have a name, or should I just address you in whatever fashion I deem necessary whenever I see?” His tone didn’t really hold any malice, though it was more to the point than intended.

The woman stopped chewing momentarily, making solid eye contact with Jayden before grinning sheepishly. Jayden could already tell she was thinking one up at that very moment and simply waited for her answer.

“It’s M- Rye- Mari- Mariah. Uh, yeah, Mariah,” she harped.

“Your name is Mariah,” Jayden repeated.

“Yup! That’s me,” she grinned. Jayden began to notice she would scratch the back of her head whenever she was nervous or embarrassed.

“You just made that up, didn’t you,” Jayden asked. He began to luagh within himself when he saw her jaw almost hit the table. Not surprised, he thought. Mariah, defeated, let out a sigh as she replied, “Alright, you got me, but I had to think of something. I mean you couldn’t pronounce my real name anyway.”

“Let me guess. It’s in some inane angelic tongue us mortals could never comprehend in a million years,” Jayden responded. No sooner had he spoke, did Mariah give him her full name, to which Jayden could only nod his head.

“Yup,” he started, “Had to open my big mouth.”

Mariah couldn’t help but feel slightly avenged for being so easily read earlier. Slightly annoyed, Jayden didn’t say another word as he finished his breakfast. Mariah seemed to be keeping pace, almost as if deliberately mimicking him. Simultaneously, they got up and walked to the kitchen to empty their plates.

“I can take care of these, so you can get ready for work, “ Mariah offered. Jayden looked at her quizzically at first, then grimaced slightly at the oddness of the simple offer. Mariah smiled gleefully as he began to wash the dishes, listening to Jayden mill about his room, then began to cringe when he began to singing deliberately off key, while in the shower.

A few minutes later, he emerged and proceeded to grab his keys from the side table beside the front door. However, he noticed something immediately afoot. His keys were missing. He looked around momentarily before he noticed Mariah standing innocently in front of the door. His keys dangling plainly from her hands. Jayden found he wasn’t the least bit surprised, nor all that happy for that matter. Deliberately, he reached up and snatched the keys from her hands. She continued to grin childishly as he continued to eye her in the same perturbed manner he had all morning.

With a deep sigh, he looked out towards his car and said, “So, are you coming or what?” Mariah was starting to feel she was incredibly easy to read, but decided to play coy anyway. “What do you mean,” she replied. She was also starting feel she was a terrible actress as well.

“Look, I don’t know what my punishment is, ok? But I’m certain it involves you following me around in some fashion. So as I figure it, I can either give you a ride and save myself the trouble, or you can just pop up and spook the living daylights out of me, and truthfully I’m too fond of option B.” Mariah simply continued to grin, though her expression changed to that of someone who suddenly became aware that they were a complete novice at their job. Despite this, she felt it better to just get on with the program, than argue it any further. So, with a nodding gesture, Jayden opened the door and Mariah followed closely behind.

From there he proceeded directly to the driver’s side, using his key to release the automatic lock before getting in. Mariah gave Jayden a disapproving look, scoffing audibly as he climbed in.

“I can‘t believe this. You can’t even open the door for me,” she sulked. Jayden stood up, glancing over the car at Mariah. “Why the hell would I open the door for someone, no one can see,” he replied dryly.

“Oh, so you do believe I’m an angel after all and not a crazy person?”

“I’m actually starting to believe you’re both. But who cares, this is the 21st century. Chivalry is dead.”

Mariah pouted momentarily before getting into the car. Jayden started the car shortly after and turned his head to back out. It was only briefly, but he caught himself eyeing her in a way beyond normal. He quickly shook himself of the idle thought and continued to back out.
“Ass,” Mariah blurted. Jayden stopped himself and looked at her again, only to notice she was still pouting. “What’d you say,” Jayden demanded. He knew he heard her correctly, but he wanted to be certain his mind wasn’t playing tricks on him. As he waited for a reply, Mariah quickly changed her expression and started to look herself over in the mirror and said curtly, “It’s the 21st Century, remember?” Jayden’s expression returned to his standard grimace, and without another word, he backed out and headed off to work.
Jayden soon realized he was now faced with the challenge of all this a secret while trying to lead a normal life with a pretentious angel glued to his back. It was as if for the first time, he was not in control of his life. He began to play the scenarios in his mind, trying to figure out how he would react according to her actions. If she was, in fact, invisible to the rest of the world, he could just pretend everything was fine and simply ignore her. He played several more scenarios, before coming to a startling realization. Regardless of what she was, she could interact with the real world, and it was very possible he could find his food or anything for that matter flying across the room if he didn’t play his cards right.

As he came closer and closer to work, Brent suddenly entered the equation, and from there, he just knew he was in for a long day. The car ride itself felt longer than he was used to, and he could feel his attention drift every so often towards Mariah. Despite how he felt about her, he couldn’t bring himself to deny the obvious fact that she was unimaginably gorgeous, and he was hadn’t’ been with a woman in well over a year at this point.

When he finally arrived to work, Brent was standing cheerily by the curb, coffee and donuts in hand, smiling cheerily as usual. “I’m fucked,” Jayden muttered to himself. Mariah glanced over at Jayden momentarily and smiled sincerely. However, Jayden was too wrapped up in his own head to notice.

“Could you like, phase through or teleport through the door or something,” Jayden said absent-mindedly. He was gesturing wildly with his hands, never really bothering to look Mariah in the face. Mariah just continued to smile and listen to Jayden banter on. “I mean, I don’t know. It’d just be weird to have my door, like, suddenly open on its own, ya know?”

After a while, Jayden finally looked over to see Mariah staring at him smiling ambiguously as if he had just said something out of the ordinary. “What,” he asked, his face quizzical. “Nothing,” she responded, “I just think someone’s standing outside in the cold waiting for you.” Jayden didn’t even bother to respond, opting instead to gather his composure and just get on with this charade, before his mind exploded.

“Here you go boss,” Brent said in his usual chipper voice. Jayden tried to act as normal as possible, accepting the gifts and hurrying towards the door. Without so much as pausing to breathe, Jayden devoured as much of the donuts as he could in one breath before washing it down with the coffee. He tossed the rest of the box over his shoulders, which Brent caught with relative ease.

“Oh boy! Half a box! I am truly blessed this day,” Brent shouted ecstatic. Jayden stopped momentarily and put his hand to his forehead. He started to look around cautiously, wondering where Mariah might be. After a while, he gave up and proceeded to clock in.

Much to his surprise, much of the day seemed to be going by without incident. Brent was being Brent, though his boss was mysteriously no where to be found and Stacy… He wasn’t sure what Stacy was doing. He made his way over to her, seemingly unnoticed, standing off to the side so he could get a better view at what she was doing. He started to glance over the counter, only to notice that Brent never followed him when he came near her. “Peculiar,” he said to himself absent-mindedly. The statement was barely audible, but it was enough to snap Stacy from her trance, as she jumped half startled and embarrassed, reaching frantically to cover up what she had been doing.

Jayden furled his upper lip, when he realized he had just lost his opportunity to spy on her, then raised an eyebrow when he caught Brent’s name showing through her sprawled out arms.

“Writing love letters on the job,” Jayden said nonchalantly. “Why do you always know everything,” Stacy said, reaching to gather the letters up and hide them away.
Jayden paused momentarily and looked away towards Brent, who was trying to hind behind the front counter. “I don’t know everything,” Jayden began, returning his attention to Stacy. “Like, why the hell do you like Brent.”
