Title: Loyal Subject
Length: 1,350 words
Author: shieldkitten
Rating: R (language, crossdressing, violence, implied sex)
Summary: AU, Ryeowook gets a Christmas present for Heechul, and it's in a body bag.

Corpses are fucking heavy, was the thought that ran through Ryeowook's mind as he dragged the body bag up two flights of stairs, bumping the head of that random lackey against the steps without relish. Well, maybe not so random - Ryeowook was pretty sure this was the guy whose spittle had landed on Heechul's brand spanking new Jimmy Choos, and if it wasn't, then, well, oops.

Ryeowook really hoped it was the same guy, because he'd run out of ideas for Heechul's Christmas present, and everyone else had already gotten him something fantastic, like a slinky black dress or a slinky red one, all with the price tags still on so Heechul knew just how much they cost. There was a mirror affixed to the wall in the hallway and Ryeowook checked the bruise purpling around his left eye, and the dried blood caked around his split lip and hoped Heechul would see that this was a price tag of a different kind.

"Holy shit, what happened to you?" Shindong asked as Ryeowook rummaged in a drawer, looking for a ribbon.

"Christmas shopping," Ryeowook replied, trying to choose between a pink bow and a red. The thing about body bags is that they're just so easy to coordinate. He decided to go with the red.

"Is that one of Kyuhyun's?" Shindong asked, toeing the body bag.

"Do you mind?" Ryeowook asked, pushing Shindong's foot off. "I don't go around sticking my foot in your gifts."

"That's because my gift is a box of chocolates, not whomever this is," Shindong said. "You better hope Kyuhyun doesn't notice he's missing a lackey until after midnight, or we'll never have holiday ceasefires again."

"Sungmin will distract him or something." Ryeowook signed his Christmas card with a flourish and tied it to the neck of the body bag, along with the ribbon. Shindong looked over the finished result and whistled.

"You're one screwed up son of bitch, Ryeowookie."

So there it was. Ryeowook was reminded of it every day. Screwed up, psychotic, just plain weird - changed, Ryeowook, Yesung had said, you used to be so innocent, but Yesung's opinion didn't matter anymore, not since he'd defected to Kyuhyun's side. Ryeowook gripped the body bag as if he were gripping Yesung's neck and heaved, dragging it down the hallway again to Heechul's room.

See, that was something Ryeowook didn't get, defecting. He'd been nothing but a beggar on the streets before Heechul had found him, soft and weak until Heechul taught him to make his heart hard and his punches count. If you can't kill them, he'd said, then you can at least get blood on their clothes. It meant something to Ryeowook, serving Heechul, protecting Heechul's interests, and he'd assumed it meant the same to everyone in the gang, until one day Kyuhyun had fired a round of bullets into the wall beside Heechul's head and announced he was leaving and taking some of the others with him. Sungmin, of course, and Zhoumi, too, and Ryeowook had a sneaking suspicion Kibum played for both teams, but he wasn't going to be the one dumb enough to voice that suspicion. Yesung had been, and now Yesung was missing an ear, but Ryeowook wasn't going to feel any pity for the traitorous fucker who'd gone and taken the only working pair of headphones with him, the irony-loving asshole.

If Ryeowook ever saw Yesung again, oh, if he ever saw Yesung again.

"Thinking dark thoughts again, hyung?" Henry asked, leaning against the door to Heechul's room, and Ryeowook smiled as sweetly as he could remember how.

"I've got a present for him," he said, indicating the body bag with a tilt of his head.

Henry raised his eyebrows, but didn't ask. Instead, he pressed his ear to the door.

"Give it a minute," he said, making a face. "Hankyung-hyung's still in the middle of his gift."

They passed the minute in silence. Henry restrung his violin bow, replacing snapped hairs with new ones. Ryeowook watched him, idly wondering how a violin would sound if you smashed it over someone's head. Henry would probably know - he was already on his fourth violin since joining Heechul's gang - but Ryeowook didn't like to pry.

Well, that was a lie, he loved to stick his nose into other people's business, but only when it benefited Heechul or himself, and anyway, it was really only a matter of time before Heechul assigned him and Henry on a job together and Ryeowook was bound to find out all sorts of things about Henry then. Henry pushed himself off the door seconds before it swung open, and Hankyung stepped out, hair tousled, lips bruised, marks on his neck.

"Well that's just not fair," Henry murmured, watching Hankyung leave. Ryeowook patted his back and tugged hard on the body bag, dragging a track over Heechul's lush carpet.

"Hey," Heechul said, reclining on his chaise lounge, looking thoroughly well-fucked. He was breathtaking - he always was, especially in that black dress of his that was clingy in all the right places. "So what did you get me?"

Ryeowook edged around the body bag, suddenly shy with the realisation that every other gift Heechul had received thus far, littered around his seat of power, was some variant of shiny or expensive, and Ryeowook's really was neither. "It's just that guy that got your shoes dirty, which is kind of crude and now when I think about it, it probably isn't that great a gift, so I'll just go and get another one for you. Do you like diamonds? I could probably rob a jewellery store before midnight if you like diamonds."

"Come here," Heechul said, and Ryeowook approached him gingerly, thinking he should've straightened up before he came to see Heechul, brushed his hair, washed his hands or something. Heechul lifted a hand and Ryeowook tensed, expecting a slap or a shove, but Heechul only closed his fingers under Ryeowook's chin and turned his head to the side so he could inspect Ryeowook's black eye.

"Did you go hand to hand?" he asked. Ryeowook nodded, and Heechul scowled.

"What did I say about keeping your distance? You're small, you don't have the strength for hand to hand. Next time bring enough bullets to finish the fight or just the one to pierce through your thick skull."

Diamonds, Ryeowook thought miserably. I should've gone with diamonds.

He bent again, getting ready to drag the body bag back across the room. He'd just dispose of it, try again next year. He was almost out the door when Heechul stopped him.

"Catch," he said, fishing out a small tub of some sort of cream from among the pile of gifts on the floor and lobbing it across the room. Ryeowook caught it against his chest and glanced at the name, printed in gold letters.

"You rub it around your eye," Heechul said. "After you cleanse your face, before going to bed."

Gratitude bubbled up in his throat and he swallowed quickly, biting his lip because Heechul never liked to hear things like thank you and I would die for you if you asked when people actually meant them. His lip began bleeding again, and he licked at the cut, sucking his lip in between his teeth and letting the coppery taste wash over his tongue.

"Oh and Ryeowook?" Heechul called out even as Siwon entered the room, bouquet of roses in one hand and a beautifully wrapped box in another. "Don't dump the body just yet, I have a fun idea."

No, I would never betray Heechul, Ryeowook thought as he helped Henry string up the body bag, ribbon, card and all, outside Kyuhyun's headquarters bright and early on Boxing Day.

"We've got company," Henry said, glancing over his shoulder at the five men coming up behind them, probably less than pleased to see their comrade swinging in the wind. Ryeowook watched Henry pick up his violin by the neck, tapping the body against his leg and smiled, reaching for his own gun.

He'd brought enough bullets this time.
