Josh and I finally chose our last names. I had been in favor, and still am in my heart of hearts, of combining our last names to make an entirely new name. No one in our families was too crazy about that, and ultimately Josh did not want to complicate his daily life quite that much. I don't blame him. Since I was planning on changing my name anyway

And P.S.--the response you gave to your mom was exactly the right one. You shouldn't make your decisions based on how future generations will deal with it. Your kid(s) are going to do what they want anyway--and will be smart enough to figure out what is right for them.
