Not a bad week, if I say so myself. I was grumpy with Angry Bee on Monday. I felt really bad afterwards, but the dude really does try my patience. He doesn't quite get that I'm still in my first rotation, I don't know everything and I'm still putting information and rationales together. He seems to think I should know everything. Mind you, the man is a new graduate too. And I doubt he was as astute a student as he wants me to be. I think of rationales for doing things and he tells me I'm completely wrong, when I gave him 90% of the correct answer. Then I start getting angry at myself for not knowing the answer and even more confused when I look stuff up and find I was on the right track.
Still, I'm mad at myself for getting upset, so I'm going to try to make it up to him. And avoid all day adventures with him. Small doses are much better for both of us.
The rest of the week was decent. The head MDA cornered me and asked me some pediatric questions, since we were doing that in class. We had a nice discussion, I answered all his questions correctly, then I hit on his weak spot - apparently, the man doesn't know much about tracheal-esophageal fistulas. Fascinating.... *files this in back of mind and laughs maniacally*
Aside from that, I passed my peds exam with flying colors today. I can't think of the last time I got a hundred in, well, anything. Maybe ACLS or BLS or EKGs. It's nice to see my old triple-digit friend again. Especially after I got a B on the maternity exam. This should bring me back to an A for the class. The only grades they give out in clinical are B's, so I'll take all the A's I can get. Especially since we need to maintain a B-GPA, or get the boot....
The only drama went down on Thursday at another site. I was in the anes office for my school today dropping off the weekly paperwork when one of my classmates who's at Goodie's stopped in and the head clinical professor had a convo with her that sounded like trouble in front of me and another classmate. Apparently, she had her first surgical death at Goodie's last week. It didn't sound good. Late afternoon, only one MDA and CRNA around and the surgeon mucked around and made a huge mess. A MAC case - HD cathether insertion, I think, turned into a disaster. Surgeon sliced the SVC and the pt bled out into their chest. Sounds like ol'Lawless and Big C, actually. Apparently, the last thing the pt heard before they coded was the surgeon going, "oh shit, I nicked it!" Since it was late, they couldn't get a hold of a CT surgeon, and this dude had no clue about opening chests and cardiac massage. Shit, I've seen it so often, I could probably do it! At some point, the pt was intubated, accidentally extubated due to position changes, and unable to be ventilated due to 3 Liters of blood sitting on the lungs. So, the surgeon is blaming anesthesia for the mess and told the family it was anesthesia's fault.
*sigh* What am I doing in this sue-happy career?
