The Opener: Chapter 2

“I’m still amazed at how many calls we’ve received today.” Officer Traveston complained as he
put down the microphone on the receiver.

“At least, it’s not the domestic abuse day like last week.” Officer Winston commented.

“Those always get to me.” Officer Traveston admits. “Every woman I see, I picture as my wife. If
anybody hit her, I’d…”

“Your wife is lucky to have you.” Officer Winston said with a grin as she poked her partners fat
belly. A laugh escaped her lips.

Officer Traveston’s fat, overgrown belly jiggled for what seemed a few seconds in slow motion.
Waves of excess fat from overeating, lack of exercise and hours of sitting on his toosh in the patrol car
and at home wiggled their way from one side to the other until he put his hands over to stop the
movement.  The fat had spoken.

“You’re just jealous.” Officer Traveston told his laughing hyena of a partner with a grin.
“Secretly, you like me for my body.” His smile almost made him look proud.

“Officer Traveston.” She scolded, giving him a disappointed look a mother would give. “Keep
those comments to yourself.” She pointed a finger his way. “I am your partner, not your lover. Want
your wife to be informed of this?”

Officer Traveston straightened up, looking at his partner a bit hurt. “I was only kidding.” He
played with his fingers nervously as he looked down, almost pouting.

Officer Winston studied her partner as she had the other times she had when he made these
comments.  He could easily get a sexual harassment suite filed against him but she wouldn’t do that to
him. His comments were harmless, if not hilarious.

Officer Traveston was wearing  a black police uniform, looking rather embarrassed by his past
behavior. His short black hair moved along an invisible line to his beard which was of the same black
color. The beard made his face look round, like a lollipop.

While cops were required to be in shape, it would be easy, and nice, to presume that Officer
Traveston was ‘big boned’. If not for his good track record of police workmanship, he wouldn’t be the
exception to the rule.

“We’ve got a trespassing transient in the northern part of Highland Ridge. Rouge 1; copy?” The
police radio buzzed, interrupting the officers concentration.

Officer Traveston picked up the receiver. “Rouge 1 copy.” He answered professional like,
sounding serious and devoted. It was unlike his previous acts.

“Proceed to 1100 W. Bell Bottom Drive immediately. We got some panicking citizens whom we
need to calm down before anyone gets hurt. Over.” The police radio buzzed.

“We’re on our way. Over.” Officer Traveston answered, starting the police car in the right
direction of Highland Ridge.

“Highland Ridge this time again?” Officer Winston said, shaking her head. “What’s their problem
now? Did someone trample on their lawn again?”

Officer Winston was tired of the calls from the rich neighborhood of Highland Ridge. Almost
every call came from some snobby resident who thought they were better than the rest of the world.
They would look at the cops condescendingly, like they were the worm sent to do their bidding
only. Perhaps in their mind, they thought they owned the police station with the simple threat of their
lawyer stepping in. It was really ridiculous.

“They are tax paying citizens.” Officer Traveston reminded his partner.

He was well aware of her dislike for the residents at Highland Ridge, and usually had to remind
her. The last thing he wanted to see happen to Officer Winston was to be fired because of a sarcastic
comment that was taken wrong by one of the residents who could afford high end lawyers.

Officer Winston was a good cop and he cared for her like a sister. Officers of the law were a
family of their own and took care of everyone. He was going to make sure another good cop kept their
job.

“I know.” Officer Winston sighed. “I wish the residents would pull the needle out of their ass
and deflate the helium of pride. Maybe then, they’d come back down to Earth. They’re so arrogant.”

“Fear not.” Officer Traveston told his partner with an arrogant smile. “We’ll rid them of their
‘terrible’ problem before they can call their fancy lawyers in suites.”

This made his partner smile. Officer Winston’s smile would bring any rock hard mans heart
pumping a mile a minute in a few seconds flat.

“Concentrate on your driving.” Officer Winston reminded him as she pinched his arm. “You’ve
both of our lives in your hands right now. Drive.”

“Okay. Okay.” Officer Traveston said, rubbing his arm where she pinched him. She always
pinched so hard for a female. He always wondered where she’d learned to do that but this was reality.
He had to drive to solve one of the irrelevant problem that seemed to always persist with the residents
of Highland Ridge.
