Furry Fandom: Grow a thicker skin!

Jun 02, 2009 23:16

Alright. First rant and rave of my journal here. I'll probably end up making a voice post about this once I get back from Iraq since I feel it is worthy. Perhaps even a youtube video. Here goes!

As many of you may know or experienced. The furry fandom is a very big target when it comes to online trolling and harassment. Many furries then ponder "Why is it that these people are doing this, and why do they hate us so much?". Well, the answer is actually quite simple.

Online trolls are doing this because the furry fandom has revealed itself to be very susceptible to common insults as well as taking things very personally. They now see the fandom as what they would call "a giant lulz cow", or basically a fandom that is very easy to acquire lulz from. However, many furries think that these trolls have a passionate hatred for them. When in all actuality, they don't. Some furries reading this may be saying now "Oh you are so clueless, they hate us so much" No.....they don't. My reasoning for this is that they have no reason to actually hate the fandom.

Yes, they say "Yiff in hell furfags", and "GTFO my internetz furfag!", and other various insults. Hell I even had someone on youtube that found out I was in the Army tell me "I hope you get captured, raped, tortured and killed by an Islamic terrorist cell, because every time a furry dies in the most painful way possible, an angel gets it's wings". Granted that is very similar to the Westboro Baptist Cult and very harsh, that person was just misguided and foolhardy, maybe he did really want me to die, who knows? Like before though, 99.99% of the time they are just trolls being trolls. They want to get that reaction or rise out of you so that they can get a laugh plain and simple. They don't really care if furries get off to art of anthro animals having sex with each other, or what there fetishes are. Think about it, if someone was really that concerned with what you jack off to or what gets you hard at a moment's notice, they are either 1. Very interested in learning more about it from you, 2. Way too nosey, or 3. Have a complete lack of respect for privacy.

The only justification for actual passionate hatred for the fandom is if, for example, a married couple has a son or daughter that has a bachelor's degree. That son or daughter then finds the furry fandom and develops an interest in it. It's fine at first, and that son or daughter is now only a week away from earning their master's degree. At that point though, that son or daughter gets very sexually active within the fandom, and proceeds to buy numerous fursuits made for sex, sex toys, porn and other various items in that degree. They end up spending all of their money, drop out of college, and lose that chance at a master's degree because they liked the fandom more. Since that happened, the parents find out that the furry fandom is what caused this sudden change in their son or daughter's life. On those grounds, they end up hating the fandom for how it has destroyed their son or daughter's life and now seek to make the fandom a group to completely avoid and to be ridiculed. Granted I might share this anger if I had a child who did that (Although children is not something I plan to have, too much trouble if you ask me). However, although the anger may be understandable, it is still no grounds for hating the fandom as a whole.

That was just one example of why someone would truly hate the fandom. I'm sure there are a few others. Also, if a troll says "I hate furries because they have sex in fursuits" or something along those lines, again, they don't hate the fandom, that is no reason to. It doesn't affect them in any way, shape, or form. They just want you to think that so that you will react and they will get their laugh.

Furries in general tend to overreact to many small issues that give them a bad image. They immediately cry "Fursecution!" and spread the word like a new plague is coming. The fandom overall just won't accept the fact that some aspects of it are going to be criticized. The majority can't take a joke. And that is the main problem right there. You have to learn to laugh at yourself for once, and stop defending the fandom like it's the newly discovered holy grail. Avoiding being trolled is so easy as well, especially on youtube where a lot of it happens. You can delete any negative comment, message, etc. rather than feeding the troll and giving him what he wants. But no, the fandom being what it is, has to stand up tall and be that wall to defend the furry fandom. It's fucking rediculous.

I'll close with this. To the majority of the furry fandom, stop being whiney bitches, stop overreacting to events that portray the fandom negatively, learn to laugh at yourselves for once. Accept the fact that the fandom will be criticized for what it is mainly seen as. Most of all though.....GROW A THICKER SKIN!!!
Laters.
