here and had forgotten.
Summary: He still doesn't know the answer.
He's never gotten math. Ever. According to Alex, he's pretty much down there on the list with her when it comes to the confusing subject. Justin doesn't say anything about it, but he remembers a time when he was age seven and his siblings where poking fun at him.
"What's two plus two, Max?" nine year old Alex giggled out, leaning forward as he backed away, intimidated.
Justin smiled, apparently finding amusement with his sister for once. "Yeah? You're in the second grade. You should know this."
It was a joke, Max knew that much. They were teasing him about something, but he couldn't figure it out. What was special about 2+2? There wasn't, the young Max concluded. His brother and sister were just trying to trick him.
Standing before them, proudly, he blurted out, "Nothing. Two plus two is nothing."
They laughed in his face, Max remembers. Pointing and jarring him with his apparent failure to outwit them. The seven year old turned away from them with a frown, confused. What was the real answer then? Was this the teacher's fault? Had he not remembered what the answer was?
Max climbed up the stairs to his room and sat on the bed alone, thinking.
--
"C'mon, Alex. It's not that hard. It's almost like putting two and two together."
The breath from his lungs leave him as he recognizes the single math problem that still creates a brick wall for him. Flickering his eyes to his right, he spies his sister and her friend. Seated lazily at one of the tables, Alex groans in annoyance. Wearing a fruit salad-themed dress, Harper stood over her friend, pleading for her request to be granted.
"Alex, it will only be a week to practice, and you won't have many lines. And you'll be playing the best friend."
Shaking her head, his sister refuses. Max frowns as Alex states, "I don't want to help you with your play. I have other things to do. Like...sleep."
Harper's shoulders slump as her last attempt fails again. Turning to go down to the basement (her room), Max quietly follows. Before she steps down the stairs, he grasps her arm, causing her to still. Blinking suspiciously, Harper stares at him.
"Does the part need just a girl?" he asks seriously. Upon her shaking her head, he spreads his arms to present himself. "Then you found the perfect actor for your play."
It takes a few seconds for her register the suggestion and, when it does, a bright smile spreads across her lips. Instantly, she's hugging him and pulling away, thanking him. Alex throws them an interested stare. Hurriedly, Harper looks back to him.
"We'll need to practice the lines soon though..."
As he leans forward and whispers to her, "Let's go," he finally concludes that he doesn't care what 2+2 really is. But he's sure it has something to do with special.

Okay, so this pairing I would like to see happen. It's unlikely, but it'd be nice.
