I thought it would be a good idea, since I'm writing a story about an everygirl in a fantastic situation, to finally sit down and familiarize myself with the other classics about everygirls in fantastic situations that I can think of. I'm already pretty familiar with the Narnia series, obviously, but I've never actually read The Wonderful Wizard of ( Read more... )

oh hey, I wasn't even considering movies! That is another thing that I have shamefully never seen. I'm gonna have to see if I can snag a copy somewhere.

Hmmmm . . . trying to think of stories of that ilk, but all I can think of are Fairy Tales like Beauty and the Beast and East of the Sun and West of the Moon--and the female protagonists aren't as everygirl as you're looking for, I would imagine.

Though you might want to check out Jean Cocteau's 1946 version of Beauty and the Beast, La Belle et la Bète. For a 1946 movie, the imagery is fantastic, and Belle doesn't quite act as she does in the fairy tales. She acts more realistically in the situations she is thrust into.

And I imagine you already have Spirited Away in mind for this, yes?

It's funny that you mention East of the Sun and West of the Moon, because earlier today I was looking at some G-G-G-GORRRRGEOUS illustrations done for the story! I will check those out, but they aren't exactly what I had in mind, since I'm going for more of a "girl from relatively modern earth is in a completely different world" sort of feel rather than a "girl of the times is in an unusual situation" like a lot of fairy tales.

Also, I have considered Spirited Away, but I already am drowning in Japanese pop culture examples (Rayearth, Escaflowne, Fushigi Yuugi, etc etc) so I wanted to widen my influence a little :') Thanks though! I'd actually kind of forgotten about it.

Ahhh, was it perhaps the illustrated version of East of the Sun and West of the Moon by Mercer Mayer?

I have all of those books AND The Labyrinth, if you want I could just lend them to you as most of them are surprisingly short reads. I've never warmed to audiobooks, people interpret things differently when they read, and that goes into their voices... if you're not in your own head when you get into a story then what's the point?

Anyway, give me a call if you'd like me to lend you anything

Princess Bride, of course.

And Labyrinth was novelized, it's just hard to find. :<

Actually!

For more recent stuff, check out Inkheart. I just finished, and it's pretty fantabulous.
