but Urasawa's characters are all so distinct you will never mistake a character for someone else.

Unless he intends for you to, as he does on occasion.

Aaaaaah, thank you for saying all the things I love so much about Urasawa. Whatever weaknesses I think he has in extended storytelling (remind me to talk about the way he ended Monster sometime), he really is fantastic overall, and so incredibly underappreciated.

sdlfkg oh I hadn't thought about that actually. I haven't seen how he ends things because I haven't actually read anything of his to completion yet, but I do hear that Monster's ending is disappointing :( oh no I hope he doesn't fall apart long term because he starts things so strongly!

sdklfjg also yeah I hadn't thought of that. The mark of a STRONGER artist is manipulating your recognition :')

He held it together really well until the end. His problem is like...He gets to a good ending, but he doesn't know to just end it there? Like, I deny the existence of the last couple chapters of Monster, because it ended so satisfyingly a couple chapters before, but then he just keeps going for another two or three chapters, and the power of the one is just totally lost. Even though the actual ending is the conclusive one, I was really unhappy with it. I kind of feel like he had a similar problem with 21st century boys, and like he resolved it with Pluto, but then with Pluto he's working based on someone else's work, so who knows.

lkjsgk I want to say it's MORE touching because her face design is so endearing but that's just because I love goofy faced robots more than anything

holy crap, I'm VERY impressed by Urasawa's work. I'd love to see more of it. We need to see each other in person sometime soon ;_;

I'm almost inclined to disagree regarding the expressiveness of the robot's face, the little reflective glints on her lenses make her look as if her eyes are beginning to well up with tears. coupled with the way her shoulders begin to slump and her gaze migrates downward toward the end i would say that there are a lot of physical cues about how sad she is (and thank god that none of them are the shaded over eyes anime trope that you mentioned, god i hate that). This was deeply affecting, Pluto you said it was? I shall have to make the effort to track it down. please continue posting stuff like this and nerding all over it, its a better use of this space than lolcats.

oh wow, I hadn't even consciously picked up on that! You're totally right and the only excuse I can give for not noticing is it was so subtle you get the feeling that it expresses without even realizing it and I am totally pulling that out of my ass but it sounds good.

Yeah, "Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka" is the full title I think, and if you like suspense at all I recommend both this and his other newly released series, 20th Century Boys. 20th Century Boys is kind of an apocalypse story, while Pluto is sort of about that whole "can artificial intelligence have a soul" that you see a lot in sci-fi.

One way or another, I'll try to get you hooked up with some of it!
