[Comfort, closeness. Matt knows those now, smiles as he turns in the bed, aware of J there within arm's reach. His sleep schedule's been shot all to hell since he died. He doesn't mind; his most natural hours to keep make him practically nocturnal.

The dream shifts, and Matt knows what it is to be cold and alone, too, feels the pain he didn't experience himself, not in real life. Too much hurt, too much death to have seen and caused so young, but there's a way past it. It takes a long time, and it all still hurts while you're healing, but those little, everyday moments, they lay a balm over the places that ache, and one day, you don't feel broken anymore.

Matt's not sure he's spoken to the boy who was dreaming all this (the bakery guy, right?), but there's one thing he needs to know, one death he shouldn't carry with him.]

It's not your fault. About Marco. I mean, if that happened, and went down that way. You didn't know.

[The swearing's unexpected, somehow, and Matt quirks half a smile.]

I don't think a goddess would expect anyone to be perfect all the time.

[Matt can read the confused look, but he can't think what could have prompted it, so he mentally shrugs.]

Is that the other thing she gave you? That you can't show over the net?

I sure hope not, because I think I have a long way to go to control my temper all the time.

[Gau blushes, but he's pretty sure that admitting that is part of growing up too.]

Yeah, that's the blessing she's given me. It doesn't work over the net, but it works in person... there have been a couple of times now when I was traveling to other villages for supplies when I've been able to get out of potentially scary situations that way.

[OK, Matt definitely likes Gau. The kid blushes as much as Matt does.]

...It works on the locals?

[That would be interesting. And actually useful, more so than Matt's given these supposed gods credit for being so far.]

Mmhmm. I haven't found anyone or anything it doesn't work on yet. I had a few locals actually upset with me in Hisato one day at the market, and it just... when I spoke to them calmly about the situation, they were calm too, because they couldn't help but be.

[He shrugs his shoulders, smiles a little.]

It did give my partner a headache when I used it on him, but he's already got some issues with headaches.

[For some reason, he feels like he's struggling for details there, but... the strange feeling over that just slips away.]

You know Allen and Rin?

I mean. [If Gau does, it's probably pretty obvious where Matt's going with this.]

Maybe that's part of why your goddess gave this power to you, to help smooth things over between new people like us and the locals.

[He feels a little weird suggesting basically using Gau as what? Something like an emotional bodyguard? Portable Zen? But if Gau were up for it, it could help a lot.]

Yeah, it probably does have something to do with it. I think it's helped a lot in my dealings here in Mizusato anyway, and I've been able to travel pretty freely.

[A pause.]

I'm hoping that I can use it to help others, but right now there's a lot that I have to get settled for myself, as well.
