[Video: Week 19, day 2 | Shortly before noon] A proper introduction is probably in order

Feb 18, 2011 15:51

[The screen flares to life to the sight of a certain brown-haired young man some might remember from the other day, the one that made quite the noticeable intro. Only a moment later it's covered by a hand that awkwardly adjusts the angle; it's a little tough to figure out how far it reaches and all that, so he can mostly just hope it's working out ( Read more... )

Weird things happen all the time, man.

[Have a Matt, smoking, looking thoughtful. He's taking this greeting the newbies thing seriously, though he guesses Elliot doesn't count as a total newbie anymore. Looking for patterns, he can understand that, even if it's doomed to lead to disappointment.]

I'm Matt, I've been here, like... three months? It gets hard to tell. Time's kinda fucked up.

And it seems like it's totally random how long people stay, but most of us are in it for the long haul, far as I can tell.

[..."man"?

Okay. Uh. Whatever that means. Seems to be some sort of address. It kind of sounds rather impolite, which he doesn't like but he doesn't say anything. The disapproval is probably very visible on his face, though.

Time is... "fucked up"? Well, he has noticed...]

The days seem longer.

Yeah, and the seasons change too fast.

[He hasn't sat down and worked out the numbers or anything, though he is curious what the length of everything would mean about the size of the world. Really, he just chalks it up to magic and lets it go at that.

He notices the guy seems offended, but Matt's not sure why. The swearing?]

What's it like where you come from?

[He doesn't care about swearing, though he doesn't do it much himself.

Well, he hasn't been here long enough to tell about the seasons so he'll take the guy's word for it. He might see it soon enough, though he does wish he gets to go back eventually. ...he thinks?]

In what way?

[That's a very broad question.

...actually, a better way to put it would be:]

I mean, about what?

[Let's start with the basics.]

People come from all kinds of crazy times and places. Like, it was 2010 for me, and I was in Japan.

[Some places don't even have Japan, and some have alternate versions, and Matt has a vague memory of Goku being from a world like his, only not. And of course, J is from basically his world, only with vampires and no Kira, and then there's people like Tree-Hugging Guy, whose worlds are totally weird. Sometimes, he wants to make a chart to keep it all straight.]

Japan? That's not any place I've heard of.

[And he gives the time and place that the manga hasn't actually told so just putting it like this dealwithitTM yaddayadda. Shaking fist at mangaka, dude.]

[video] Trust me, I've done my fair share of fist-shaking at canon! XD mightstealyrcar February 22 2011, 05:24:22 UTC
Huh. This place is like Japan, only way before my time. Centuries before.

[It's interesting: how do you figure out where the divergence is, if your worlds don't have enough in common for context? Could Matt ask 'does magic work in your world?' and be sure Elliot knew enough about his definition of magic to answer sensically?]

D'you have anything like the Hitomi back home?

[Yep, this place definitely seems ancient in his standards too. Strange as it is in general, he can tell that much, it's not so hard.

He shakes his head.]

No. [Not even close.] I take it you do.

[The question must have come from some place.]

[That helps place him somewhat better, tech-wise, anyway.]

Something that can make calls and send text and video, sure. Broadcasting dreams? Not so much.

[It's only fair to warn people about that. Not like there's anything they can do about it, but at least it won't be a surprise, right?]

[Oh, he's heard about it all already. Helps to have people from your own world here.]

Tch. Would that exist anywhere else?

Hey, you never know! Maybe it's an important industry in the future.

[Matt would have been the first in line to link his brain to his computer, if that had been invented in his world.]

That would be a horrible future.

Not if you could just, like, record them, and keep them private.

[...no. It's bad enough that he has certain dreams way too often. Who would like to record such things?]

Depends on the dream.

Well, yeah. The Hitomi has a talent for picking the last ones you'd want people to see.

Great.

[Well, he sure knows what will show up for him then. Looking forward to that, yep.]
