Oh my god, are you serious?

[Matt's grinning, and the question's mostly rhetorical.]

I played games like that when I was a kid, but dude, they weren't even close to real. Did you use the cards to travel to other dimensions, too, or what?

No, the dimension thing was a different thing. It wasn't related. [ Man, now Juudai wonders if everyone's going to think he can just go to dimensions whenever he wants. ] I can't do it on purpose.

So, it sounds like your world is kind of like mine, except yours doesn't have magic. [ Quickly appends: ] Or it does, but differently.

It doesn't. Not really. [That's a gateway to a depressing line of thought, and Matt doesn't want to go there right now.]

But we have ancient Egypt. And modern Egypt, too.

So, like, where does skill come in, with these games? 'cause for me, it was mostly luck, and you could set up your deck to be powerful and shit, but-- Heh. I should probably tell you right now, I'm kind of a geek.

[ As Matt's questions turn to the game itself, Juudai's eyes light up. ]

Well, there are a lot of different deck strategies that a lot of people use, like whether you focus more on traps or high-powered monsters, or use certain combinations... I run a fusion-based deck myself.

But the best duelists I know count on a lot more than luck; what's really important is to believe in your deck.

[Why, yes, Matt played Magic, and his favorite deck was a mix of green and black, nature and necromancy. He liked the unexpectedness of it.]

Man, I can only imagine what I coulda done with cards that were, like, sentient. Heh, do you get a lot of breaks in fights for rules-lawyering?

Well, not everyone can talk to the cards. [ He shrugs one shoulder. ] But... yeah, it's been so long, I can't really imagine trying to play something like Duel Monsters, but with no... [ hmm, what's a good word ] ...no one to talk with.

Rules-lawyering? - oh, wait, I get it. Um, not really at the higher level; most people know the major rules, and when you play with Duel Disks [ Juudai pulls his out of his duffel to show it - ] the system doesn't recognize an illegal action, so it's harder to cheat.

Oh, dude.

[Admiring, though Matt could talk himself into loopholes in the rules with the best of them, in his day.]

And, like, every 'verse you've visited before runs this way, too? 'cause I've never heard of a place like that.

[He can't help but think it would be fun, a game one step away from life and death, though he knows that probably wasn't really the case.]

We had games in mine, sure, but. They were just games. In real life, you kinda had to keep your head down, or pay the price.

Yeah, they did. [ Juudai never thought to question this, but now.... actually, it does seem a little strange, if you think about it. At the very least, it seems a little coincidental. ]

Pay the price? It sounds like you had a tough time.

[Matt shrugs.] We had a serial killer with a god complex on the loose. I guess I kinda went looking for trouble, but it woulda found me eventually.

Can you still... talk to your cards here?

[ The second question goes unnoticed. ] A serial killer? [ NOT LIKING THE SOUND OF THAT. ]

What, do you not have them in your world?

[Yagami took it to extremes, sure, but he wasn't the first to have the idea, and Matt was positive he wouldn't be the last.]

Well, of course, but I didn't think - that - do serial killers often show up here?

[ It's less that Juudai is actually worried for his own physical safety and more that why would there be a serial killer here ever ]

Only one I know of, and he's not here anymore.

Um, sorry about my world sucking?

No - I mean - that's not what I meant.

[ He runs a hand through his hair. ]

Sorry. I overreacted a little. This is all just... really new.

Eh, I don't think that was an overreaction.

The so-called gods have stated their purpose as teaching us to get along, which I don't buy, but it does make sense to grab people who really, really need to learn that.

So... this is like boot camp for people to learn how to live with each other? [ Hey, Juudai resents the vague implication that he can't get along with people! ...On the other hand, does that mean that everyone else here has problems, too? Maybe he should keep this in mind. ]
