Trigger Warning: Reference to Suicide. As if these twins ever stop.

[The ground was soft. It was...some kind of plant. A carpet? No, this was grass. Fai remembered soft carpets and thick pillows, but he'd only seen grass in picture-books. In another life, he’d been familiar with thick robes and warm blankets, but it all seemed so long ago. He remembered clean too, and safe, but only the kind of safety that came with Yuui’s hand in his, knowing that his twin would never hurt him, no matter what else everyone else did. It was warm here too, and that was a fine memory to dwell on. The ground was soft here, thick with life and that rich loamy smell that came with a healthy forest. Fai drug his hand across it wonderingly, watching the blades bend and reform under the pressure of his touch. It was so quiet here, peaceful rather than lonely. He could hear his own heart beat.

What?

Where was he? He'd been falling, falling like he'd so often planned to, off the tower, down and down and down. Yuui- he'd seen him, just once, one fleeting, blessed moment of recognition, and then- grass against his face. Was it real? Did it really happen? He remembered the foot-smoothed stone under sore, bare feet, and that strange leaning and the weightlessness. The dreams he’d lost himself in had never been like that, the falling was fast or slow, or terrifying, but never so weightless, like already being dead. But, if he wasn't dead, then...then that man had lied to him! Fai scrambled to his feet, and slipped, suddenly dizzy as the sudden, frenetic movement drained blood from his head, and hunger twisted it's teeth in him a little deeper. He stumbled, reaching out with one hand and caught the edge of something rough and strong- a tree. But his grip was too loose and he scraped his palm raw on the bark as he fell again.]

No...this can't...

[He blinked at the sound, more a croak than a voice, and stared at the grass. If he was safe and warm, this was Yuui's safe and warm, this wasn't supposed to be his. Why was he here? Why had he been saved?

Had he been saved?

Was this the place of life after death? Fai lifted his head to the sky and looked around. He was a tiny child-skeleton, all matted with hair and clothed in rags, peering up into the shifting, light-dappled branches of an impossibly huge willow set in the center of an impossibly serene clearing. At the edge of the grass a rabbit considered his presence, still ruminating, then bent back to her meal without concern.

It had to be the most beautiful, the most peaceful place he'd ever been to. It was nothing like he'd ever known before, and more than anything else, Fai never wanted to leave. So long as he stayed here, he could forget his pain, and the weight of the days, and just rest. That's all he'd wanted, knowing Yuui was safe: just to rest.

He never even noticed the glowing screen of the Hitomi, lying haphazardly against the roots of the tree, continuing to record his still form even as he closed his eyes and searched for sleep.]
