What's your definition of a monster?

Just curious.

[Short and to the point,] The willfully malicious, with no regard for the life they take.

[After a moment, more quietly...] But I do not exclude myself-- my own actions-- from this definition.

However, when it comes down to protecting those whom you care about from those who would do them harm, sometimes you must become a monster to the monsters that you face. Otherwise, what is to stop them?

What are you even...

Stop that.

Stop what, exactly?

Stop... talking about yourself like that! You don't fit your own definition. I've seen what you've been through, remember?

[He takes a deep breath, trying to calm himself. It's not that he's angry with Matt, but he is frustrated with himself.]

You've also seen what I've done, Matt. You know I didn't give a damn about those Yeerks that I've killed. You know why they call me their Beast.

I know you did what you had to do to protect your people, and I know you didn't kill for fun. It was war. You can't beat yourself up over not feeling compassion for the enemy when the enemy was evil.
