[A stomach-turning lurch, like the world has been briefly knocked off its axis, and Kurogane falls to the ground in a tangle of steel and bloodied limbs. He springs to his feet immediately, sword held at the ready in one hand. Crimson eyes gauge his surroundings, narrowing in suspicion

Matt landed in Kannagara gasping for breath himself, patting his chest down for holes that weren't there anymore. He's only seen someone really arrive wounded once before, and he tries to keep that mental image far, far away from his conscious thoughts.
He doesn't know if he can do much for this guy, but he can at least try to talk him through finding help. He has his goggles pushed up onto his forehead and a cigarette hanging off his lip when he sends his message.]
Hey! Guy! You still with us?
Reply
Huh.
[The box was talking at him again. With a mental shrug, Kurogane picked it up and peered at the screen. The man who stared back at him had red goggle imprints on his face and a cigarette dangling from his mouth.]
Still alive. Who're you?
[Small talk had never been his strong suit.]
Reply
What the fuck happened to you?
[He seems remarkably lucid for someone Matt would expect to be in shock by now.]
Reply
Might've tried to cut my own arm off before coming here.
[He definitely wasn't ready to get into that right now, so soon after being pulled back from the brink of…well, death.]
Name's Kurogane. The blond bastard found me after I landed here. Fine now.
Reply
...why?
And I dunno any blond bastard here. Heh, not anymore.
Reply
And 'here' is pretty creepy. You know about a place with a big magical tree? That's where I landed.
Reply
Yeah, the tree's where everyone arrives. Are you sure you're not gonna keel over dead?
Reply
Pretty sure.
[Flatly, a statement rather than a boast.]
I've been through worse.
[Crimson eyes flicker as he processes the rest of the statement.]
Where 'everybody' arrives? So…there are lot more people in this place.
Reply
[Oh, right: the newbie spiel. He was a little distracted until now.]
Supposedly the gods brought us here, and weird shit tends to happen. There's places like hostels where you can stay if you need to.
How come you called the tree magic?
Reply
You mean you didn't feel it? It's--
[He scratches his head, struggling to form a coherent explanation.]
It just--has this feeling about it, you know? I can sense the power. I dunno, maybe it's because I traveled with a mage for a while before coming here.
Reply
[He hesitates, taking another drag from his cigarette.]
I could totally geek out on you right now, but I can do it later if you're not feeling up to speed yet.
Reply
What's 'geek out on' mean?
Reply
In this case? Means I'd ask you all sorts of dorky questions about how magic works and stuff.
Reply
Couldn't tell you much about how it works. All I can do is sense it and then get the hell out of its way. The guy who saved me's a mage, though--he probably could help you, if you ever manage to get a straight answer out of him.
[A sour grimace.]

You know Fai?
Reply
You could…say that.
Traveled with him before we both landed here. Different times, though.
How'd you get to know him?
