The mini-hydro (micro more than mini, Matt thought) generator looked homemade and sort of kludged-together, because it was. In fact, Matt wasn't sure anyone but him would've recognized the little device as what it was supposed to be. He'd gotten as far as he could with what he'd been able to afford from the summoning shop. It looked like a weird little wheel, slats of wood sticking out of cork, attached to a wooden disk with coils of wire and small magnets alternating around the circle.
The wire and magnets had just about eaten his savings, and he hadn't had enough left to buy any way of measuring how much power it was producing, except for one: a tiny light bulb, maybe twenty cents in his world.
He'd spent a while thinking about ways to generate electricity, and now that they were in Mizusato, this seemed like the best bet. Matt would have said, if anyone had asked, that all he really wanted out of this was another few hours of charge on his GameBoy, but he'd kinda been entertaining ideas of maybe hooking up the café somehow, if this worked, maybe even sharing the tech with the locals, to help, in a small way, sure, but to help, bridge the cultural gap.
He lowered the little wheel into the water by the crude handle he'd attached to it. The stream was fast-moving still from having tumbled down the waterfall just above, and the wheel spun quickly. That much worked, anyway. Matt gathered up the trailing wires, and held the bare ends to the contact points on the tiny bulb.
It lit up, and Matt grinned. "Oh, fuck yeah."
[ETA: feel free to have people wander by and handwave that they were there at a different time from other people! Matt's probably going to be hanging out for a while.]
