Being a single guy with no parents and a married younger sister, Yukimi hasn’t had to look after anyone else except for himself in quite some time. His apartment is his crash pad, his home office, his game center, and personal post-it board. It’s his castle and his domain, where he can come and go as he wants and, if he so chooses, the place where he can throw himself in front of the telly with a bowl of sodium laden instant ramen and call it dinner.

As he recently has discovered - kids change everything. They demand things, like food and sustenance. They cramp his style. But in Kannagara, it so happens that he's the closest thing there is to an adult-type person to watch over Yoite and Miharu, so he really had no choice but to step up and do whatever it is that semi-mature people do in such situations. They pull together a haphazard household and stock the pantry with vaguely nutritious food items and hope for the best. Actually, Yukimi has done a little more than that, but he sometimes wishes he could be more laissez faire. Especially when it comes to non-eaters like Miharu, who can barely be persuaded to eat more than a bowl of rice before he declares himself "too full" for anything else. But Yukimi can’t seem to switch on the ‘couldn’t care less’ button and let the stubborn kid starve himself, which he finds very bizarre.

Today, he’s whipping up some fried noodles he picked up at the market on the way home from one of his assignments. With any luck, he might teach a thing or two about cooking to the kiddies, and Miharu might actually eat something resembling dinner before the evening is out.

“Hey, how are those mushrooms and onions coming?” he asks, glancing over his shoulder to observe the chopping station that he set up for the mise en place.
