Summary: Matt discovers Jessica has gone missing, and his friends try to help him cope.
In the moment between opening his eyes and being really awake, Matt thought the storm had woken him up. The light from outside was pale, but it was daylight, and the sound was deafening: hail clattering down.
In the next instant, he realized the space beside him on the bed, the space where J ought to have been by now, was empty.
Matt scrambled out of bed and hastily pulled his jeans and shirt on, calling, "J? Jessica?"
Maybe she was somewhere else in the house? Hadn't gotten to the bed before morning?
He went through every room, except for the occupied bedrooms, calling for her softly. They hadn't really settled in yet, and his voice echoed hollowly back to him from the empty rooms.
Not here.
There was a way to know for sure if she was in Kannagara at all, but Matt stalled. He smoked some. Had some tea, which he didn't actually like, but it killed time. Lit up his pipe again, and sat at the table in the kitchen to look at the Hitomi.
She really was gone. Gone, and probably still not too happy with him, if she even still remembered him by now. Matt put his head on his arms, facedown on the table. He'd rather have her still pissed than forget him entirely, but really? Both options felt crappy.
What Matt really wanted was to go back to not feeling much of anything at all.
