[It starts at sunset, and doesn't stop.
At first it was hardly noticeable - a deafening silence, broken up by a few strange sounds. Perhaps a strange yelp, like the howl of a cat. Or the rustling sounds inside supply sheds, sounds of wood snapping and food stores tumbling and spilling across floors. Perhaps the sensation of being watched.
By the time the last red sliver of sun was flickering out of sight, they had arrived in droves. Some tear apart buildings like twigs, smashing through stone and wood like paper. Others have no interest in destroying the villages themselves - it's the living that they're looking for, and they can smell them. They rush for anything with a pulse, howling.
Some come with holes in their chests, wearing strange masks made of bone, in all shapes and sizes. Others are smaller, like crosses between men and beasts, who cry out for guts. Some appear almost human, if you don't look too closely.
There is no starlight tonight, and the red moon offers little in the way of visibility. But one can always hear, or perhaps even smell the scent of rotting flesh that lingers on the monsters - even the living ones.]
