Real life: Grandma was in hospital over Christmas (nothing dangerous, she was out after two days.) So I went to see her on Christmas morning. She seemed pleased I was there, but not actually pleased enough to, you know, be nice to me. She was unpleasant in general, but the highlight was being told off for stroking my belly. I don't even know I'm doing it, usually, it's automatic when baby kicks to rub there, but then, that's the issue - not supposed to draw attention to evil lesbian baby. :| She was cross with Dad for bringing me all the way in instead of making me walk far which was also, we think, because he was actually acknowledging the fact that I'm third trimester with hyperemesis and that therefore I'm pregnant instead of ignoring the pregnancy. This was after she had to have noticed that I was being violently sick in her hospital toilet. And that was just a choice couple of the bitchy moments. On Christmas morning, in hospital.
Fandom: I tried to post about this on Christmas Day, but I could not get the post button to work, I DON'T KNOW, LJ, so I am starting again from scratch. What that means is that I have three stories to squee about rather than one.
I have been completely spoiled rotten again this yuletide. I went to pinch hit for the first time ever, so I was all keyed up to have something rushed out by some kind hearted soul that I would be genuinely grateful for because it was so nice of them to cover me. Instead I got not one but two stories in fandoms of my heart that were exactly what I most wished for in the fandoms and were beautifully written and characterised and left me just dying of squee, and now a nearly full length Madness story that points towards the happy ending for Clash I always wanted and also wins on characterisation and writing, and I am SO LUCKY. I feel like yuletide is always too good to me. :) I've devoured them, and I will go back and reread when my initial excitement is better.
All three stories are beautifully well written and have my four favourite things: focus on female characters, loving attention to canon detail and feel, paying lots of attention to what I blathered on about wanting (so egocentric) and lovely characterisation. Incredibly spoiled.
So, in the order that AO3 let me know about them,
The Adventure of the Silver Bell - Agatha Christie's Tommy & Tuppence/Young Adventurers series. Proper grownup T&T and just the most darling, happy Christmas Mystery for Tuppence to solve and drag her Tommy along with.
The Night After - Angela Brazil's A Fourth Form Friendship, Mabel/Aldred. Just the most perfect getting together of these very flawed girls, and exactly the kind of delicate f/f I love most in school stories.
Shelter - Jem. Raya (another of my canon favourites) being a complete sweetheart and reaching out to Clash after Video Wars, beautifully characterised and the fixit I really wanted, somewhere between gen and f/f.
If you read this - thank you so much, yuletide writers. We didn't do gift exchanges on the day, so these were my exciting presents (one arriving, as per tradition, late ;) ) and they charmed me completely.
I will do a proper recs post later, but I wanted to plug my stories first, because they deserve attention. Besides, even only reading the ones I'm really interested in, I've only reached A.
(Still don't know if my recipient liked her fic yet, but at least some other people seem to like it...? At least one person finds the gender issues discomforting, but yeah, I was a bit uncertain about them myself.)
