So the poster compels me to posit a question I have had about metal heads for quite some time. For a group of people that use so much imagery from fantasy literature, why are so many of them so hostile to the D&D kids in high school?
Do people still play D&D? Back in the 80's the only people I knew who were hostile to D&D in high school were misguided Christians. I know two metalheads on my friends list who are into that nonsense and I completely make fun of them, but am in no way hostile. I find it silly, but they are both grounded in reality. The D&D people I knew in high school were stereotypical nerd/geeks/dorks who lived that whole lifestyle and were their character in the offtime. They were weird. When I was in the Marines, I knew people who would tie up the the rec room, put their map of Galdarathyyrign (or whatever their mystical land was called) over the pool table and stay there all weekend. I also noticed (from my interaction with these people) that they seem to spend a lot more time talking to each other aboot their new character, or what new rule book they got, or their pretty dice...rather than playing the game. And if the DM doesn't like you, you get killed
( ... )
I think the causality of your statement is wrong. I think social outcasts were picked on. I think social outcasts played D&D. But I don't think it was because they played D&D that the kids were picked on. I mean they weren't a terribly visible minority in your high school where they? Playing in the halls? Painting miniatures at the lunch table?
