Am totally having my mind blown by the meta concerning Nyota Uhura.
Am realizing is a terrible, sexist, gender essentialist asshole.
Is hoping to come to grips with self immediately.
Cannot wait to fully assimilate information after mind is done being blown.
Is sorry it took so long in the first place.
Is super duper excited.
Cannot wait to apply new

At first I was like "OMG. She's so cool," in a very serious way. Like I left HP fandom for her and Spock after ten years of unwavering dedication to dramione. There's a lot of details there, but continues. As I'm wont to do, I started thinking critically about her characterization/plot line and my conclusions were...sloppy.
The only one that holds true is that Zoe Saldana's performance was uneven, (which is Uhura's prerogative cos really people can do whatever they want) and I honestly have that assessment for every ZS film that I've seen.
However, I did get so, so, so caught up in the anti-lady rhetoric that she was just a love object. Part of that sexism resulted from a. minimal screen time b. blatant ignorance c. wanting a fuller character arc (haha as if/but biggie for me) d. --this is why I'm like fu self--viewing her character in relation to Spock as opposed to seeing her as a reasonable human being capable of agency. I hadn't seen this latest round.
I joined the spock_uhura community shortly after seeing the film, but I had to leave it because it was ruining my love of the characters -- when I commented on something and got the classic 'It's not about you' answer, I clicked the button! At that time, the hot topic was ZS's hair (which shouldn't, apparently, have been straight) and I hated the way she/Uhura was being criticised for failing all sorts of random 'tests'.
I've loved Uhura since I was 11 years old, growing up in the north of England, where the only options for a girl were a) to leave school and have babies or b) to become a hairdresser -- and there she was, on the bridge of the Enterprise (though never being quite as kick-ass as I would have liked). The fact that she was black never entered my head. I suppose I should have identified with Chapel, being white and blonde, but she was an idiot; Uhura was clever and strong. And she flirted outrageously with my favourite character, Spock! ( ... )

I did see that epic fail that was hair post. I saw how it polarize the community and the not-giving-a-fuck that people were slinging all over the place. From the brief period I've shipped, I've discovered just how vigilant the new moderator is and I must say the community has really matured (read: calmed their shit down).
So when she kissed Spock in the turbo lift, I was cheering (silently)!
Right!? The scene that resonated with me was when she challenged her posting to the Farragut. She was so take charge and listen here, things are gonna happen this way. I just loved that her relationship with her superior did not necessitate her being subdued.
