“I said that I like your eyes. You are pretty.” Jonghyun’s smile went wider, before he picked up his coffee to take a sip.

“What?” He repeated ”I mean, you can’t be serious”

“I am.”

Kim Kibum looked at himself in the mirror. He brushed the tip of his fingers over the dark skin on his face.

Disgusting.

He lived with that horrible, huge burn for some time by now, but he just couldn’t get used to it, to look at himself every morning. He was so ugly. He couldn’t stop felling all the eyes on him.

He used to like the attention, he liked the way that people looked at his clothes, his body, his face. They used to envy him, when he was in the stage, when they gave him flowers and asked for autographs. But it all ended that day, six months ago.

That night was a success, the house was full, there were some important art critics that could open his way to Broadway. But just when the curtains closed, a girl screamed, fire. It happened so quickly, within some minutes the whole theater was turning black and red.

It was so confusing, there were people screaming and running everywhere. Kibum went to the dressing room looking for his best friend, Taemin, the boy could be trapped inside the room. He was heading there when a warning scream came to his ears, but he couldn’t figure out what they were saying, probably his name, there were so many screams that night…

But the warning didn’t come in time, the last thing that Kibum remember was something coming direct to his face, maybe a piece of the lighting falling from the fragile structure that was the old building. And for brief seconds, all he felt was pain, burning. It was so hot that he couldn’t open his eyes, his mouth wide open letting an agonizing scream, before everything went black.

When he woke up, Kibum was in a hospital bed, his mom and Taemin sitting by his side, concern in their eyes.

His recover was quite fast, but it left him that horrible thing in his face. A nasty dark burn. Disgusting, he couldn’t stand looking at himself.

A simple task like buying a coffee was difficult for Kibum.

He entered in the small shop, there were some people in the tables, but not much. Most of them didn’t even look up from their drinks, but Kibum felt like all the eyes were on him.

He walked fast, with his head down, the blond locks falling on his face. The counter guy didn’t pay much attention to him, he was almost sleeping during his shift. Kibum ordered, and found a spot that he could sit in the corner, away from everybody.

He was glad that he could just enjoy his coffee while looking at the street, staring at the rain drops that started to fall. Everything was so peaceful, but it was obviously that, with just one look around he was uncomfortable already. A little girl was staring at him. It wasn’t disgust nor a judgmental look, just pure curiosity. The kids were the ones that often stared at him, he didn’t blame them though.

She was just a kid, but the stare made him feel so bad. Why people stared at him? He was ugly. Just that.

The girl’s mother also looked at his direction, wondering what her daughter was looking at. When she saw Kibum, she gave him an apology smile and called the girl.

I don’t want your pity. It was all that he thought.

It would also happen sometimes, some people wouldn’t look at him more than a few seconds, like if looking at his face was embarrassing.

“Hey, do you mind if I seat here?” The male’s voice brought him back to reality.

Kibum looked up, and all he saw were big round eyes. The most beautiful eyes that he ever saw. They were chocolate brown and were shining.

“Uh- Yeah, sure” He didn’t notice what he was saying. But just when the men sat down in front of him that he looked at the rest of him.

Just under those perfect eyes, in his right cheek, was a deep scare that started in the edge of his lips and ended next to his ear.

“My name is Jonghyun. I thought that you would like some company” he was smiling. The scare going up with his cheek as well.

“I’m Kibum” he took some seconds to answer, still stunned by the man’s eyes.

They started a small conversation, Jonghyun doing most of the talking. Kibum couldn’t help but stare at those round eyes… that scare long forgotten.

He was talking about his favorite desert of the menu or something, the blond wasn’t really listening. Until something that the other male said something that drew his attention.

“You’re eyes are so pretty.” It was just a statement, as if the previous topic just ended up on that.

“What?”

Jonghyun let out a soft laugh “It looked like you were zooming out. Are you ok?”

Kibum looked at his drink, his cheeks turning a shade of pink.

“Sorry, but… what were you talking about?” he must have heard wrong. No one would ever call him pretty in any way.

“I said that I like your eyes. You are pretty.” Jonghyun’s smile went wider, before he picked up his coffee to take a sip.

“What?” He repeated ”I mean, you can’t be serious”

“I am.”

After that, they started chatting about their appearances, exchanging their stories. Kibum learned that Jonghyun got that scar in a car accident, when part of the glass of the window hit his face in a crash with a drunken driver.

And Jonghyun learned how Kibum was an actor that was part of that theater that burned down six months ago. He was amazed by the fact that Kibum was almost ‘famous’ and said that he should try again. A proposal that Kibum brushed off without thinking twice. Jonghyun just answered that he could simply work as a director or something like that, because he saw the passion in the blonds’ eyes, and said that he couldn’t stop.

After that the appearance subject wasn’t brought up again, instead, they just talked about random things, movies or music. And only after a guy that worked in the café told them that they would close in ten minutes, was when they realized that two hours had already passed.

They just laughed at themselves and for the first time in so long, Kibum didn’t notice the woman cleaning the table staring at his face.

Outside the café, Jonghyun grabbed his hand without thinking, which made Kibum happy, it was so natural. They walked in the dark street hand in hand and, eventually ending up in a park.

There, they sat in a bench and looked at each other. It was so dark that they couldn’t see their faces well, only the low shiny reflection of the waning moon in their eyes. And it didn’t really matter because it was all that they wanted to see anyway. Only their eyes, those beautiful, round, perfect eyes. Neither of them remembered their imperfection, because in the dark of the night they could only see their true beauty.
