Chapter 2: The Paradise

“Ahh… Paradise!” Fujikawa Kazuo sighed as he sat on the porch of their rented inn and stared at the vast blue sky. Haruka were seated on the tatami mat behind him, enjoying a cup of green tea offered to them by the kind inn keepers.

“Yeah. Who knew coming with you is a good idea?” Mihoko replied, kneeling beside Haruka and combing her long hair. Kazuo, of course, reacted hotly at such comment and in no time another bickering match was in motion between the two of them.

Kousaku rolled his eyes and proceeded out of the room, placing his hands casually in the sleeves of his yukata. He hasn’t taken more than five steps away from their assigned room when he felt a light pat on his arm.

“Hey.” Shiraishi Megumi greeted him with her usual bright smile. Her eyes then wandered down to his yukata, he feigned a cough as he realized that it was a bit opened. He feigned another cough, feeling a slight warmth growing on his face.

“Aa.” he gave her his usual nod, fixing his yukata.

“N-Nice yukata.” Megumi feigned a cough as well, then stared at him with her eyes dancing with mirth, “It’s pink.”

“Aa.” Kousaku nodded again, trying with his might to keep his face as blank as usual. “Obaachan bought it for me.”

“I see.” Megumi nodded, “But it’s nice.” and in a lighthearted tone, she added, “We’re a match.”

“Aa.” he nodded back. Indeed, they were a match - the yukata that she was wearing was indeed in the same light pink tone as his. His mouth twitched to the tiniest smile as he gave her a nonchalant shrug and continued to walk.

“So, how is your grandmother?” Megumi asked as she walked beside Kousaku - hesitantly at first, but she grew more comfortable when Kousaku slowed down to match her pace.

“She’s healthier than the last time I saw her.” Kousaku replied, “I guess she’s getting used with the weather.”

“That’s nice.”

“How about your father?”

Megumi stops for a while and he could do nothing but watch as she took a deep sigh. Her father’s disease was already in its fatal stage, how could he be so tactless and mention that?

“He’s trying his best.” Megumi gave him a small smile, “He’s been more cheerful than usual and would always as much time as he could with me and Okaasan.”

She turned to him, and as if reading his mind, she placed a gentle hand on his one arm and gave him a smile, “Daijoubu. Otousan is doing his best to be strong. I have to become stronger too.”

“Aa.” he nodded, taking a deep breath as he lifted his hand and placed it on top of hers. He looked up and found himself staring at her huge childlike eyes. He took another deep breath as he forced himself to tear his gaze away from her.

“You don’t need to force yourself,” Kousaku said as he gently took her hand off his arm and started to take a few steps forward, “Cry if you must.”

He stops walking when he noticed that she remained immobile behind him, “My shoulder’s always open for you.”

He knew that sounded lame but words were never really his forte. He preferred being discreet when acting on his emotions - so discreet to the point of being almost equivalent to nothing.

“Arigato.” he heard her say behind him. And the knot on his chest loosened. They spent the rest of the morning wandering around this peaceful paradise, enjoying the comfortable silence and the unexpected warmth in one another.

‘Now, now, where did those two go?’

Hiyama Mihoko’s mind screamed as she noted her two fellow doctors’ absence. She pouted and crossed her arms as she sat in between the rather flustered-looking Kazuo and the rather oblivious Haruka (who was currently reading some health magazine).

‘Mou… just talk to her already, you idiot!’ Mihoko rolled her eyes as Kazuo continued fidgeting on his corner, fighting the urge to smack the bespectacled doctor as hard as possible on the head.

“A-Anou… Saejima-san… t-t-the f-fire-fireworks d-d-d-display t-t-tonight….” Kazuo started in a barely audible voice, looking at the ground and blushing like a boy who had just reached puberty. “W-W-Would you l-like t-to see i-i-it w-with me…??”

Saejima answered by standing up to get something to drink - clearly, she never heard Kazuo’s invitation, even Mihoko, who was seated closer to Kazuo had to frown and listen really carefully to understand what he was saying. This time, she smacked him at the back of his head. Kazuo, who wasn’t expecting it, fell face first on the wooden floor.

“Oi! What was that for?” Kazuo glared.

“Oi! You call that an invitation?” Mihoko glared back. “I am seated right beside you and I can barely hear you!”

Kazuo’s face turned anxious and he even grabbed a hold of his head. Mihoko stared at him as if he had just grown another head. Her glare vanished as she stared at him worriedly.

“Oi, are you alright?”

“I’m so lame.”

Mihoko raised an eyebrow, “Took you long enough to figure that out.” she whispered under her breath. When he turned his eyes at her, she made a rather sheepish laugh and began waving her hand dismissively at him, “I said, you’re not that bad. You’re not that bad. Hahaha!”

To her utmost surprise (and discomfort), he started to cry. She looked around for any sort of help - but Haruka was still out to get whatever drink she was that she needed to get, and Megumi and Kousaku had both disappeared somewhere since that morning.

‘This is just so weird…’ Mihoko sighed as she sat closer to the still crying Kazuo and awkwardly patted him on the shoulder. She opened her mouth to say something but she was lost for words.

That was how Saejima Haruka found them when she returned in their room. And a story of chaos ensues.
