Adobe Photoshop 7 vs Corel Painter 8: the upgrade finale!

May 26, 2003 10:54

FINALE!!!

Defending Champion: Newcomer:
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Corel Painter 8

Watch the battle to see who wins!

-Brush Fight
Defend Champion photoshop takes the first shot to painter with his new and improved brush system.
Painter blocks the punch with his improved brush system quite similar to photoshops.
Painter attacks with his custom brush system and new test preview scratch system.
Photoshop blocks and punches with it's still powerful define brush and define patterns system.
OOO that had to hurt!
Painter opens up his nozzle to image hose that is it's only defense against define brush. Painter spews out many pictures.
Photoshop tries to paint a custom brush wall but the impasto image hose pen delivers a major blow with it's textured image brush.
OUCH Photoshop takes a hit!

BY GEORGE IT's A TIE!

-layers anonymous
Photoshop and Painter are back in the ring.
Photoshop remembered Painter didn't have layers and strikes with his plus some channels.
Painter unleashes his new layer and channel counter attack.
Painter then punches photoshop with his new water color layer that can add effects that photoshop would take too long to do.

If Corel Painter 8 and Adobe Photoshop 7 still seem pricey to you check out these cheaper recommended alternatives if you still want a good image editing program but aren't sure which one to go for! (I like to test trial version software can you tell?)

Deleter's ComicArt CG Illust.
Price: 6,800 Yen (roughly $68)
http://www.deleter.com/deleter-eng/supplies/index.html
Developed by the japanese comic supply company Deleter this mini program packs a small punch. It won't take up too much memory (a minor 64 MB) and it won't burn your wallet. It's also compatible with the pressure sensitivity of a tablet! It has a cool feature that photoshop and painter doesn't have! You can make and watch mini "how to movies". Basically you just record everything you did on an image and WATCH how the artist did their work (they have a whole site of thousands of movies being added daily). So that means no language barrier! There use to be a free trial d-load to test but I don't know if they still have it (you could play the art movies with the trial version too).

I will also add Delter has made a cheaper alternative to wacom tablets and developed their own tablet. Though it's still only in japanese you might want to keep an eye out for it!
Also they have this great program called "Comic Works" which is specifically made for cg comic artists. You can have instant tones and smooth inked lines oh ya! and they have instant speed lines! It's also still in japanese but I'll let you all know when the english version comes out since I'm desperately waiting for it.

Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8
Price: $109 for the box
www.jasc.com
The much acclaimed PSP you hear about. It's a lot cheaper and does a lot and I mean a lot of the things photoshop does. It's a very good starter tool but I believe it isn't compatible with the pressure sensitivity of a tablet v.v;. Oh yes and trial version is available for testings!

Xara X
Price:$159
www.xara.com
Xara is a great digital painting program that works with tablet sensitivity! And it's not a bad price either for the full version! You can do a lot including vectors, stuff for web graphics (like slices for image map), and tons of things that you can do in photoshop too. It is also interactive with dream weaver and does flash exports O_O! Wow what a great amount of stuff for price! And yes there is an available test d-load!

Pixologic's ZBrush
Price: $400
www.zbrush.com
This is basically a 3D modeling and paint program in one with tons of things for texture! If you like texture this is your program, and yes it does have layer! You can also do a lot of great 3D stuff if you like 3D modeling. You can use it with Photoshop and also it's functional with Bryce and Poser so you can add texture or paint right on your 3D models! How cool is that!? It's a bit more pricey but with all you can do with it it's totally cool and worth the price ^__^! It's also compatible with pressure sensitivity of a table. A free trial version is available for d-load so go try it out!
