I just started reading those Mary Russell books. My son is giving me one for christmas. Should they be read in sequence, or are they stand alone books?

Definitely read them in order, if you can. Certain characters are introduced in ways that heighten the absurdity, pathos, etc. when they show up in later books. Also, the most recent one, The Language of Bees, depends on earlier stuff, and will be concluded in the volume coming out in April.
