In order to get into DC, you have to remember that they were first in everything--all those characters have huge history. Not saying marvel doesn't, just not as much. Remember that for DC, the "big 5": wonder woman, batman, superman, the martian manhunter, and the green lantern are all pre or during WWII. Maybe crisis wasn't a good starting point. Dark Knight Returns will get you more in the spirit, because it deals with history--might I also suggest "Kingdom Come"?

thanks for the suggestion. and i do indeed agree. crisis was way not a good place to start. and i'll have to check out kingdom come
