Question for Frequent Flyers (especially those with Macs)

I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row for my trip to Europe.  I decided it would be nice if I had a power source for my MacBook for the flight.  Normally when I fly, I'm just taking a short domestic flight and just rely on my battery, but I don't think my battery will last for the entire flight.  My airplane/airline is supposed to have EmPower as ( Read more... )

I don't know how brilliant it is, but when I went to Australia I had a portable external battery for my laptop that worked pretty well. It measured maybe 3" by 7" and I got it at Radio Shak. I charged it before I left (it came with an A/C adapter) and then its cord plugged into the computer's power port just like the regular power cord would. When I was in Sydney, I just used the power adapters I brought to recharge it by plugging it into the wall. I have a PC, but I imagine it would work with a Mac also. I don't recall the brand off the top of my head, but I will take a look when I get home and let you know. Oh, and M uses it for his laptop here at home, so it had uses beyond my trip. :-)

Hmmm, that might be an option, but my MacBook has a special power plug. It's not a normal thing you stick in the hole on the computer. It's a magnetic plug (it will pull out when there's too much tension on the plug). I'm pretty sure that all Macs now have this type of plug. I'd love more info on what you have, when you get a chance though, so I can look into it.

Hey Kaprin, I don't know but I've been looking into this myself - I've been reading nerdy it type forums because people discuss this sort of stuff in great detail :-) I'm sure there were suggestions for adaptors that work in cars too, but if I recall they were all freakishly expensive. I'll see what I can find.

I didn't know about the new Mac power cables - that's cool.

Well, here's what I have, for what it's worth: http://www.cellboost.com/product_laptop.htm

It's a useful gadget. A bit heavy, like all laptop batteries, but pretty small in size. :-)
